Title: 72 Cuda Resurrection
Post by: edison1970 on September 18, 2017, 05:12:23 PM
Hey Guys.  Great site.  I posted my build on the other site so picking up here at the assembly part.  Just painted the car back in June.  Putting it back together now and hope to have it drivable by December.  Here are some pictures of where I'm at.  Painted the trunk and inner fenders with a truck bed spray.  Came out nice.

Nice looking Fish!  :bigthumb:  You have some sort of inner cover for the tail panel?  '72?? we are doing one too, you are a bit further along than we are though.  Just got the main body back but waiting on the bolt on sheet metal, doors, hood, and trunk lid.

It started off as a 72.  It was a race car.  As I tore into it, there was more than expected to replace including the tail panel so I decided to go the 70 route.  It's going to be a fun driver.

Love it.  I'm building a 73 right now.  I'm thinking you should consider blacked out front radiator support. The 72-74 grill is awesome, but doesn't look right in my opinion if you can see body color behind it.  Just my opinion.  Good luck with your Dec deadline.  Totally seems possible, it's on 4 wheels.

I feel the same way about body color behind the grille.  I actually painted it black a short while ago but didn't post it yet. I painted the grille with a duplicolor dark metalic color.  It wasn't very easy to spray.  I still had about a quarter of the can left when I went to spray the last headlight bucket but it didn't lay down as well.  Also seems like more metalic was visible.  I think what happened was the pressure left in the can wasn't as good as when started.  I might go out and get another can and reshoot.  The grille by the way is from BE & A.  The quality is pretty good.

This is how the grille comes.  Unpainted except the center part that is black.  Came complete with all trim.  Delivered for $500 about 2 years ago.

I never worked on a Cuda before this one so I don't have a reference of how factory fitment was but it seems very good.  So far the two most troublesome aftermarket parts have been the header panel and the trunk lid.  I understand that most parts need a little work but they were more than expected and still I'm not 100% satisfied but sometimes you have to draw a line where it meets the overall goal you are trying to achieve.  If this was a show car, I would have tossed them and found some original pieces.
On the color, I'm very happy with it.  I made a mistake on the paint process.  I was going to black out the hood and the top of the fenders and realized I should have painted that first so I wouldn't have a hard paint line dividing the blue and the black.  I just got caught up in the excitement of 7 years of work and finally painting.  Does anyone know if a car wrap can be installed without wrapping the entire panel?  I thought maybe I can do that so if I don't like it, it can be removed at another time.

I highly doubt you will find an original deck lid anywhere , The AMD piece seems to be an awesome fit though .
Not sure on the wrap , sorry

The 72 hood stripe is a good look too.   Yes, you can use vinyl to wrap your hood and then remove it if you don't like it.

The wrap is a great way to go, How about a carbon fibre look rather than flat black if you do that?

I'm interested in the wrap.  Any ideas on the cost?
I finished the sound deadner on the roof yesterday.  Going to attempt to install the headliner myself.  Does anybody have any tips or a link to a video on their install?

I just about finished my dash.  I need to do a little fixing on the wire harness.  It is out of a 74 and has an additional seatbelt electronic box over the heater control.  Going to eliminate it hopefully tomorrow.  Other than that, pretty satisfied on how it came out.  I had to repair the dash pad with body filler and re-paint.  Put the carbon fiber overlay on. Maybe install the dash later this week.  Next install the power steering box and column.

It's been some time since I updated the progress. Between moving again and hurricane Florence, things have been moving pretty slow with the Cuda. I am finally finishing up the motor. What are you guys using on aluminum intakes as far as paint? I was thinking of putting a light coat of aluminum color paint to protect it from stains. Also finished the 4-speed and bell housing.

I had the shipping boxes special made for those grilles, 1" under the USPS requirements so I can ship them with the Post Office.  Since you purchased that grille from me and your posting on Cody's site (best on the planet), I'll paint the grille for you (if you haven't already) for $5 just cover the shipping.  I mix my own argent sprayed in the booth with a gun.

I appreciate the offer but I already painted it. I have a question for you. When the sun heats up the grille, it tends to make popping noises. I assume that it is expanding. Is that common or do I need to make some adjustments?

"Popping noises"?  I've never heard of that.

Getting ready to remove my steering column again. I pulled the manual steering and installed a power steering box and power steering column.  The problem is I can't get the coupler on the box shaft enough to get the pin in.  It's about 3/16th or so short. Can anyone think of anything else to check before I  remove it to see if the shaft is compressed? I can't get the column any further toward the firewall.

I pulled the column this evening.  Does someone have length of what the column shaft is supposed to be for power steering? Looking at the shaft, the plastic dowels look like they are missing.

Really moving along with the project. I'm hoping to get the motor in the car over the next 2 weeks. I want to get the wiper motor installed but I need some feed back first. The 3 speed motor is apparently from a c body so I  need to clock the assembly to the correct location. Is there any proper way to do this? I  think I read it needs to be rotated counter clockwise.  Thanks.

I finally fired the motor this weekend. I actually put the bottom end of the motor together over a year ago. I ran into some electrical issues that I think I can figure out but I wanted to see if someone might know from experience. I hit the key and the motor ran for a second then shut off. The only way to keep it running was running a hot wire from the battery to the coil. I was thinking to start with the key switch first. Also, my battery isn't getting a charge from the alternator. Any advise? Thanks
I wanted to post a video of the car running but the site wouldn't let me for some reason.

Keep at it.  Glad to hear all of the progress you are making.  electrical problems are always frustrating but you'll figure it out.  My ignition relay switch was no good but it wouldn't run so I don't think that's your problem.

could be a bad ign switch in the column , does everything shut down in the run position ?
I don't have a picture of the clocking on the wiper motor handy sorry

Update on where I'm at today. Fixed all of the electrical problems.  Running issue was a mix up with wires on the ballast resistor.  I still need to replace the oil pressure gauge and fix the tach. Going to do that another day. I did get the carpet in. I have to say I'm not impressed with the Trim Parts product.  It looks good but they didn't put enough material on the sides of the rear and the front did not fit well around the 4 speed hump.

Progress !
I am glad you found the electrical problem .
If the nylon pins are missing in the shaft the shaft has bee collapsed & can be pulled apart assuming you have not already solved this , make sure the tiny pin is in the lip of the coupler though so the shaft can't slide up out of the coupler

I'm getting real close to finishing my car. My next step is installing the rear and front glass. I have one question before I get started. I have multiple window reveal clips. I want to make sure I use the correct ones. I aasumed the front and the rears were the same but apparently not. I ordered a kit on ebay and they are all the same. I looked at Classic Industries and the have 2 part numbers. They look slightly different. Can someone tell me if there is a differnce and or which one is used for which window?

Doesn't the kit # reference to the front or rear application ?
Just  a guess but I would bet the front is the longer clip

The reason why I asked is that my friend's 70 Cuda had the same clips front and back. I know the 70 had screws to install but I don't know why it would change.

I wouldn've never thought of that!!!  That is indeed a pretty good color.  I've only seen a few in Viper blue but man an e-body wears that color well...

Good luck with the continued build and congrats on getting this far!!

Reaching the final chapter on the body of this car. Took 3 days last week at my buddy's body shop to black out the tail panel and do an AAR treatment.  Came out pretty good.  Looking at stripe options. Then I'm done. Or am I?
