Title: details - big block water pump housings
Post by: 6bblgt on September 12, 2019, 02:03:39 PM
There are thousands of big block water pump housings out there, the majority of the "muscle car era" big blocks used casting number 2780987 (1967-1971).
What is the correct water pump housing for a '70 or '71 big block (HEMI included) E-body?

GG's "white book" shows two part numbers:
I think the difference in part numbers is due to the tapped holes for the heater hose fittings.
2780988 - ABC-bodies '67-'69 * 2 x 3/8"NPT tapped holes (5/8" heater hose)
2951806 - BCE-bodies '70-'71 * 1 x 3/8"NPT & 1 x 1/4"NPT tapped holes (5/8" & 1/2" heater hose)

1969 Parts Catalog shows one part number:
2780988 - ABC-bodies 1969

1970-'71 Parts Catalog shows two part numbers:
2951806 - BCE-bodies 1970
2780988 - BCE-bodies 1971 Did Chrysler Corp. go back to 2 x 5/8" heater hose for 1971??

Who has a "survivor" type car that can comment on the style of 2780987 water pump housing, date codes & with or without a pentastar? Please include Year, Assembly plant, and SPD.

Does somebody have any '67 to '71 Truck Part Catalogs? What are the big-block truck part numbers?
FYI - '72 Truck w/400 shows #2951806

My car is a BS23N0B, SPD was 908.  I don't know that my car qualifies as a survivor, but I have owned it for about 31 of its 50 years.  It has its original engine and trans, so I assume that the water pump housing is original to the car.

On mine the casting number is on the upper (driver's side) portion of the housing, however the casting number is upside down (see attached pic).  I don't see a Pentastar on the pump inlet of mine.

Here's another older pic showing the heater hose connections (1/2" and 5/8") and the date stamp location below them.

No, but I will try to get a better look at it this weekend and report back.

I pulled the alternator off to get a better look and took a couple of better pics.  Looks like 9-08 to me.  Would this be August of 69 or September 8th of an unspecified year?

@73440 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/n73440_349) ** I would think that 3671315 is a superseded number, what year is the manual?

 - I would think the date (9 - 08) is September 8th of an unknown year

@DeathProofCuda (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/deathproofcuda_4918) can you see the assembly date on the pad below the distributor?  Any other engine component casting dates available: block, heads, intake, exhaust manifolds, etc.?

Right side manifold - looks like 8299 to me (date code is upside down on this manifold).

Here are some notes I made on the head numbers when I was rebuilding the engine.

I have an original 666 casting intake, but I don't see a date code on it.  I'll take a closer look at the block later this week when I am under the car again.

@6bblgt (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/6bblgt_211) I'm just playing around with part numbers on a rainy day trying to adjust to retirement. My 440, for the most part, is original (as I'm told by an older guy that owned it many years). Here's a couple shots of my water pump that seem to coincide with your list and photos. These are two shots that I had on file. My engine is in the next town over at the engine shop. I'll be headed there in a week or so if you'd like better photos, but for now, here it is...

AWESOME!  looks like the same casting as @DeathProofCuda (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/deathproofcuda_4918) just flipped casting # (both from "early" '70 model year Hamtramck e-bodies)

@7E-Bodies (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/7e-bodies_436) when you get a chance can you get a pic of the date below the heater hose nipples

& to confirm:  NO Pentastar on the outlet & 1/2" & 5/8" heater hoses

@6bblgt (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/6bblgt_211) I'm on it! I'm due to head to the motor shop (where the water pump is) hopefully Monday, 9/14/2020 or so. I'm making a note of it to grab some better shots for you. Glad I can add to the effort! (Get on me if I forget)

@6bblgt (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/6bblgt_211) I'm assuming you mean this one. Looks like a 1-0-X-2-8?
