Title: Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals Rosemont Illinois
Post by: JH27N0B on July 27, 2017, 05:32:15 PM
The king of muscle car shows' 9th edition is happening November 18th and 19th at the Donald E Stephens Convention center in Rosemont IL.  Among the approximately 550 cars on display will be over 100 Mopars.  Many are cars you usually only see in books, magazines or museums.
Of special interest this year will be a feature display of N96 cars.
In addition, many celebrities will be there, some meeting fans and signing autographs.
The convention center's location in Rosemont is on the northwest border of Chicago.  In addition, it is only a couple miles east of O' Hare airport.
Truly a can't miss for fans of rare muscle cars!

Funny...when you say "N96" Everybody thinks "Shaker" but there's a lot of B Bodies with "N96" as well. :alan2cents:

Actually the majority of the cars on display at MCACN are not local.  Cars are brought in from all over North America and there have even been a few from Europe.  A couple years ago there was a car on display from Australia!
Somewhere around 125 of last years cars were brought in by classic car haulers like Reliable.
And several collections like Wellborn and The Brothers collection bring their cars in via their own semi trailer car haulers.
Two large remote lots are used to park all the car trailers and some tractor trailers that bring the cars in the Thursday and Friday before the show.
And spectators come from all over the world to attend the show.  Their are many hotels around including 4 or 5 right across the street from the convention center.  If traveling from afar, book rooms soon as most area hotels have all their rooms booked well in advance of MCACN!

I really, really enjoyed the show in 2015 when they had the display of Hemi E Body convertibles :drooling: (despite the politics behind it :-X )

Last year in 2016 I had a factory sunroof Challenger on display that I restored and it's owner was gracious enough to offer me free flights, etc... for me to go, but again.....just not enough interest for me.  ::)

Since then, and in the future I don't think there will ever be enough Mopar content to get me to go back. I don't bother looking at anything in the show unless it's a Mopar so it doesn't take long to see all of them, although I did enjoy the vintage bicycles.

I suppose if you enjoy muscle cars of all brands then this is the show for you....they do get the best of the best :ohyeah:

Ha, ha: Ironic but my friend usually brings one or two cars there from Kelowna B.C. and yet I don't consider attending because of the distance and the fact I'm turning into more of a drive it guy rather than a show it guy. The idea of displaying barn finds with rust and dust doesn't really get me going much either.
I do like the multi make theme though.

The show is this week!  There are more Mopars scheduled this year than ever before.  I can't wait to see them!
Some of the highlights I know about include over 20 factory shaker E bodies, an unrestored one family owned since new '70 TX9 hemi Challenger (bought new by a Detroit motorcycle cop!), an FM3 70 Roadrunner convertible barn find, a hemi Challenger convertible, Waldens "4 door Barracuda", a just completed FJ6 AAR restoration, and mid 60s vintage factory drag cars.
I'll be there working during set up, and over the weekend.  Weather is looking promising, no snow storms, so I hope everyone on the fence about making the trip comes out to the show!

This was my first year of attending and my main interest was the N96 display but I must say there were amazing cars from every manufacture represented.

This year they have a good display of Studebakers  while they are not a car that I  have an interest in I have great respect for the owners who have restored these cars because it must be so difficult to restore one of these cars because of the lack of reproduction parts..

:iagree:  My brother and I have been working on our dad's 63 R2 Avanti, and it is definitely a different world regarding repo. parts compared to Mopars.  Although, Ford and Chevy still have it better.  :alan2cents:

Alan, even if he bought the car new which I doubt I would have a hard time believing Chrysler made a white hood treatment.... Maybe the dealer but not Chrysler.... And custom vinyl was allot harder to accomplish back in 1970 than it is these days.... Which means that white hood treatment probably first got applied in the 80's...

I agree, 100%. The same guy sold the FE5 sunroof 70 Challenger to my customer and was mad when I didn't paint the tail panel black, again because he insisted it was black from the factory, not having owned either car from new. :dunno:

I don't believe Chrysler had white "blackouts" available on the line. I have never seen white offered in any literature including the 71 dealers showroom trim & option selectors. The sheet on the car shows V21 & V6W. At best the selling dealer added it but sourcing it in 71 would have been tough.
If I were Tim I'd correct it. It would sharp in black.

Word was that Tim presented Pam with the car as a surprise "gift" (birthday? anniversary? idk).  :happybday:  Lucky girl!  :worship:

Even if the hood treatment is "wrong", it looks totally "right" on that car matching the white RT stripes, top and interior perfectly. It gives the car a really well coordinated look. It's a really great car with the GY3, white accents, sunroof, power windows, AC and the M28 wrap-around grill molding - my wife would even love it!!  :ohyeah:

Here's a couple more pics of "Pam's present" ...

Oh no, not at all.  That car was smashed up ages ago.  The owner displays it like that.  It was in the barns find display at MCACN this year.  I'm pretty sure its the same car I saw at Mopars in the Park up in MN around 8 years ago, he parked it up against a telephone pole there so it looked like it just wrecked!   :))
The car runs and drives, I guess there is no point in trying to restore a modest value car like that so the owner just enjoys taking it to shows as a novelty.

It is very nice, vinyl tops are not for me but it suits the Sassy Grass Green as that color is very bright and it adds definition to the car....

Glad mine isn't vinyl as it wouldn't look very good on my Jamaica Blue....

Is it a new trend to display a custom guitar with your ride...I noticed over half a dozen or more at this show, I see the case for one under the back of the Sassy AAR.   :notsure:

The guitars seem to be a new thing at MCACN.  A custom guitar maker built the guitars and they were placed by some of the cars, and they were for sale. They gave one away as a raffle prize.
Also several owners brought their own guitars to display by their cars.
I wonder if this trend will continue next year?  I'm planning to display my "refreshed" JH27N0B in Mopar Alley in 2018s show.  I have several Gibson Challenger guitars, so I thought I'd display one with my car at the show.  I wonder how many people will notice the Challenger name on the nut cover on this Gibson?  It's an obscure guitar, they only made them 2 or 3 years in the mid 80s.
I played guitar in that era and am a Gibson fan, bought a Les Paul in high school, and I never remembered seeing the Challenger.  I stumbled across some for sale on eBay 15 years ago while seeking Challenger parts, and decided I had to have one!
I'm going OT about guitars, but anyway guitars and muscle bikes are a side attraction at MCACN.

Yeah, it is!! I have a thing for GY3, FM3 and FJ6 cars  :worship:  and Lou's FJ6 AAR (and Pete's GY3 Hemi GTX which was near it) were an irresistible force that drew me right in from across the venue like a tractor-beam!!  :takealook:

Seemed like it was part of a "theme" that they had running - 50th anniversary of the '67 cars and the "groovy" psychedelic music of that era perhaps??

Great photos!!!  What is your thoughts about this years show?  How's the quality of the cars and what did you like most?

Third time I've been there. The 2015 show with the 27(?) Hemi E-body 'verts was almost like a spiritual pilgrimage to the Holy land, but they all have been great and this years show was no exception. There are a lot of "restorers" at the show and they "showcase" their work by displaying some incredibly fine cars. In fact, IMO pretty much all of the cars, whether they are being showcased by a restorer, or simply displayed by the owners, are, or are near, top tier in their quality. It's a must see if you ask me. :alan2cents:

I'd really like to take my AAR to this show next year. Been on my list of places to go for a while now.

Would really love to meet up with ebodies.org members that attend. To those that attended, what are the hotel options? Figure I need to get it booked.

The convention center is in an entertainment district a couple miles east of O'Hare airport.
There are literally 4 or 5 hotels right across the street from the show location!
Most offer a special MCACN rate for the show dates.
The hotels and rates are listed on the MCACN website.

Any hints floating around as to what Tim Welborn would like to see next year ? I understand he has a bit of influence.....I heard of the 2016 sunroof display at the show in 2015, when I met Tim.

While Tim is a integral part of the MCACN show landscape, the invitationals are done well before his involvement.

The ones I can talk about, Class of 73, Class of 68, Barn Finds, Original Gassers, AMC is the big brand, hopefully have some rare AMC prototypes coming out of the woodwork.

Here's more of the section for 2018!

Scat Pack vs. Rapid Transit System; this is the "big one" that you will see up front, with Plymouth RTS cars on the left and Dodge Scat Pack cars on the right!

Class of 1968 50th Anniversary Display.

Oldsmobile W Machines; Dan V. aka PostSedan will chime in on this one, as it is unlike any that we have previously hosted and we have some very special features happening.

Nickey Gasser Invitational. You have seen a few of the wild straight axle Gassers that have come out of Nickey Performance over the past few years, now see an entire display devoted to them. Hosted by Nickey Performance along with John Tinberg and the crew that build them

1968 Hurst Drag Cars; using the "display within a display" theme, much like what we did with the '67 Z28 invitational, this will spotlight the Hurst built drag cars of 1968 as part of our Class of 1968 Invitational; featuring the Hurst S/S Hemi Darts and the Hurst S/S Hemi Barracuda's. Hosted by Jim Kramer, you will see restored and originals along with some very special guests.

Original Owners & High Mileage Muscle Invitational. We have had so much fun with original owners, we want to encourage their participation. If you are an original or long term owner of some prime factory muscle or C1/C2 or C3 Corvette, or have driven your muscle car or Corvette over 100,000 miles and it still shows nicely, please consider joining us for this one.

Returning Special Displays; with new (old) cars, of course!

Barn Finds and Hidden Gems. Again, a whole new crop hosted by Automotive Archeologist Ryan Brutt.

Mustang & Shelby Pinnacle competition. Launched in 2016, this is for the best of the best that have already achieved both SAAC and MCA Top Tier awards. Hosted by Bob Perkins, Rick Campbell and Jim Cunningham.

Vintage Certification, Presented by Frank Badalson's American Performance, LLC. You guys know all about this one! Hosted by Steve Shauger.

Muscle Bicycles, Presented by Koolestuff.

Triple Diamond display and competition, Sponsored by Corvette Central. For Corvettes that have already achieved NCRS Top Flight and Bloomington Gold certification. Truly the best of the best!

Corvette Legends, Sponsored by Dr. Pete Gimenez/Corvette Legends; Featuring the L/88 Corvettes of 1968 and 1969 this year.

Studebaker Legends III; Again, a whole new group and a whole new theme for these factory supercharged beasts. This year we will feature a very special man that has played an incredibly important role in putting these cars on the Muscle Car map. Hosted by Eddie George and his family.

Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race display. Again, with a whole new group of PSMCDR cars, hosted by Donnie Brass.

Of course, this is just the beginning and more will be announced as we lock in details and cars.

If you have an idea or would like to coordinate a special display, please let me know; bashton426@gmail.com.

Thanks for the update on 2018 MCACN Ryan!
This presents a dilemma for me. With all the work I've been doing this year "refreshing" my convertible, I was planning on displaying it in Mopar Alley in 2018.
But with this Scat Pak v RTS display, if my T/A makes the cut to be chosen as one of the dozen or so Scat Pak cars in the display, that would really be cool to be part of the 2018 biggest feature!
