Title: Now I get: "I want to buy your car flyer" at the door
Post by: Topcat on April 15, 2018, 08:06:54 PM
Last 3 to 6 months I've had 3 people trying to inquire about buying my car.

Last week one guy even left a flyer.

Ever had that happen? People coming up to you?

Keep the garage closed.  :looney:

But they see the Dana underneath the car cover if the garage is open.

Happened to my brother last year. I told him it was going to happen because he had the door open while working in the driveway. Sure enough.....

Been pestered for years.... Keep the cover on, door down as much as possible... Sad, you work hard to be able to enjoy your toys & then ya gotta hide it ...

Yes: If a person wants to sell a car they generally advertise it. I keep the garage close all the time as well.

One of the best parts of our area is the rearward facing garage. We have an alley behind the house [houses on both side], only a handful of folks see the car when it's out. :wrenching:

Take it as a compliment, but also drop the hint about your alarm system, .44 mag., pit bull, lo-jack, brother is the sheriff, you're always home, etc....

The garage doors are a bone of contention in my house. I have, since the beginning of our relationship, told my wife to keep the doors closed as much as possible, and it just doesn't happen as much as I would like.  :tired:

I live on a somewhat busy street. It hasn't happened in awhile but most every time I would take it out of the garage to work on something a perfect stranger would stop and  ask questions sort of feeling you out I would think? Mostly admiring the car and telling you about a buddy that had one back in the day sort of stuff. Sometimes time is in short supply to work on the car and I just get started doing something and someone wants to talk when I want to work. Bothered me when they would go eyeball the contents of my garage as I have a bit of money tied up in equipment and tools. First thing that pops into your head is are they casing the joint to come back later to steal something. Sometimes I park it on the lawn when moving cars around.... then people often stop thinking it's for sale.
I guess these cars bring lots of attention mostly good I guess but some bad too.

The contractor that paved my driveway had to have access to my garage. He gave my number to a buddy of his that cold called me asking me what it would take to sell my 70 Challenger to him. He left me about 6 voicemails...

Nothing  attracks more attention in my neighborhood is when I start my car. I also keep a moving blanket over the trunk so people who gaze into my garage can't really see what I got.

We're fortunate. We live on a cul de sac and only my immediate neighbors can see the garages and driveway. They're all cool and the kids like the cars.

I've been followed home before though in the neighborhood. Usually really nice guys who "have seen" the car driving around and just curious.

If I was followed outside I wouldn't drive home.  I pulled over once and let him go past me.  He just waved and kept going.

I walk around a couple times a month in the driveway as well in my underwear, LBE and With my AR.  Keeps the crazies away.

My Cuda is the same way, and I try to not start it until its after 8:00-8:30 am but there are a couple car shows that start early.  There is one car always parked up the street from me that I set off their alarm every time I drive by. I like all my neighbors and neighborhood, and they put up with me so no need to piss off people.

85% of the time the cars have their cover on them, so its hard to tell what I have but a few have stopped when I have one in the driveway.  They tell their stories and ask questions, part of the joy of owning a classic Mopar.  The only times I get offers are at shows or occasionally while driving.  I throw out a very high number that I would gladly sell it for, and that usually ends the conversation.

These old Mopars attract attention. A friend of mine has an automotive repair business on a busy street. A customer has a 1971 SuperBee at his place for an rebuild of the 383. It's parked in the parking lot where it's seen from the street. The customer is the original owner and would never sell it. My friend has people stopping in all the time asking if the car is for sale. He said it's very distracting but brings people in. He told me he could have sold it many times over if it was his.

People stop by all the time to ask about buying cars on my lot.

I welcome it.

I'm the guy that cold knocks on your door when I see some stuff on your property.
I've literally driven every alley way east of the Rockies in Colorado.  Denver is the exception.
I'm not afraid to ask anyone anything.  And I'll shoot back if there is a problem.

Everyone wants your cars.  That's part of having the best cars on the planet.  Mopars.

I had a guy cold call me & he starts with I own your car if it is what I believe it is so we just have to agree on a price , pissed me off so I hung up on him .
A few minutes later he calls back & is a little more friendly & asks if the car is real , I tell him it is & confirm the details , & he offers me a blank check , just tell him the number to fill in , I laugh & ask if he has that much $$ & cannot find a car like mine how could I ever replace it ? So I told him it was not for sale as I would rather have the car than the $$ , wished him well in his search & let him go without even getting his phone #. He ended up staying in touch & did buy a R/T SE but it was not FC7 & it was not 4 spd & it was in much rougher shape & i heard he paid 80k for it before restoring it . Who knows what he would have paid for it , maybe I should have sold but I have no regrets !
I have sold before & immediately regretted it so why sell ?
On the other hand my 71 Charger ........ :bricks:

No flyer at the house but notes left under the wiper when parked somewhere else. The typical, "if you want to sell call ***** at *********".

Most of the inquires are at stop lights and stop signs when out cruising. Really don't know how serious they are because I've never pulled over to discuss it.

I can understand some people not wanting to sell their rides for any price but me I agree with Alan.
If someone offered me 1.5 or double what I paid I'd sell it.

On another note I may have to sell my ride if business doesn't pick up.  :(
Having said that I won't loose any sleep over it. Sure it'll suck but that's life.

At 62 years old, I've bought DOZENS of items that "weren't for sale, but COULD be bought"; as a result, my motto is "If you don't ASK, then the answer is NO!"  I would hope that you're already doing your due diligence with respect to multiple forms of "security", including replacement cost insurance; if not and you lose it, then it's a lick on YOU...

As I type this I'm wearing a watch that categorically was NOT for sale.  I tracked the guy down from the watch forum, introduced myself, offered him double what it was (technically) worth, and he agreed to sell.  O.K. - it was "only" $800, but he just happened to be in the situation where his wife wanted a $1,600 rug which they could now buy thanks to ME showing up from out of the blue.  Net-net; EVERYBODY's happy!

My answer to those queries:  "It's not for sale, but it CAN be bought!"  Geez guys, they're all just "things"!  I love my "things" as much as the next guy and prolly more than MOST, but I've never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch on it...

A VERY close friend of mine since 1978 - fitness FREAK, workout freak; always eats healthy and always HAS, never drank, smoked, did ANY drugs including NSAIDS - guy won't even take an aspirin; diagnosed 2 years ago with metastatic melanoma.  71 years old and unlikely to live until year-end; multi-multi-millionaire who has owned more incredible cars than ANYONE on this forum (How 'bout an original birdcage Maserati?)  Not a week goes by when he doesn't say to me "I can't BELIEVE this is happening to ME, as careful as I've been my whole life..."

And yeah, when he dies, yours truly will be buying his "Dream Cuda" directly as a result of same; how's THAT for "bittersweet"?  Sorry for the AM caffeine-induced rant; not a religious man, no kids either - just a GREAT wife and five rescue cats; wouldn't trade the lowliest of my cats for the nicest '70 Cuda on the planet!  It's only money and it's all in fun, Boys & Girls...

Well Mike I think those lovely car shows on Velocity are rubbing off on the common folk.

I've been approached 3 times in the last 9 months asking about cars in the drive, thank god the garage door was down. The thing that gets me is these guys show up thinking they can get my rides for next to nothing. I answer the door pretty pissed so they don't stay long in my driveway. As if to say "Did I invite you on my property?"

:Stirring:

and yes I have a sign up saying "No soliciting at all" - these fools keep ignoring it.

I have mixed feelings when I read threads like this.  I almost never get bothered with want to sell it questions with my cars.  My garage is behind the house and I usually keep the doors closed.  But I have my cars out and about a lot during the season to cruises and shows and don't get that question.
My good friend Glen has a GA4 4 speed '71 Challenger convertible and we park together with my FK5 70 convertible at cruises often.  At least once a year we will be sitting there and someone will come up and ask him if it's for sale. I imagine he gets many more when I'm not around.  He also has a red 71 "hot rod" hardtop Challenger with a built 440 and Tremec, and last year a guy came up to him and offered him $75K for it.
My vert I've had maybe 2 or 3 ask in 21 years.  It's a show winner, even a few best of shows, but no one likes burnt orange I guess.  Its the last of my fleet I'd sell, and I really wouldn't want to sell it even for silly money as I'm financially secure and enjoy the car more than more money in the bank, so its just as well I don't get pestered.  :bigthumb:
And of course my 71 4 speed V code in autumn bronze, perfect original body, advertised for several years with only a few tire kickers calling.
No one wants burnt orange or brown cars, so if you want peace and quiet, buy one in that shade! :alan2cents:

My parents bought mine in 72' gave it to me in 78'.

2 restorations it's gone thru.

First one wasn't very good. I got ripped off.

I have so many gallons of sweat built into this one.   :crying:

I built in the back yard in Hot days and an patio umbrella.

I just can't even think of entertaining an offer right now after what I went thru to get it where it's at now.

Eventually I will have to. But I hope that's still a ways off.

I keep my garage closed up & alarmed 99% of the time. Altho I've had intrest over the years (I just give a quote of some astronomical number).  I worry more about theft/vandalism. The whole neighborhood knows what in there, as soon as I fire her up. I make it no secret that I carry........

The day I brought my Challenger home, had to park it in the driveway that night. Four different neighbors driving by stopped in front of the house and got out of their cars, walked up my drive way to survey the car. Not cool. Lesson learned. I keep a car cover over it and parked inside the garage. I have an ordinary, all original, low mile 2000 Silverado black ext cab 4x4 that people leave notes on: "CALL me if you want to sell your truck." People have driven up my driveway when I'm in the garage and asked how much for another classic muscle car I owned. I tell them it is not for sale. They say, everything is for sale....HOW MUCH. I tell them what it is worth and they leave in a huff. A neighbor  couple blocks away in the last three months has asked six times or more when I'm selling my 68 AMX "Go PaK" to him. I said, what is so important about my car? He said it is a local car and has never had rust and has all the original sheet metal and paint. Apparently we are not entitled to privacy if we own classic muscle cars. When the garage door is open I make sure my 140 lb rottweiler is in clear view...nosy people keep driving. I also hung my firing range targets  on the garage wall. They get the message.

I make a point of keeping my garage closed as much as possible.  That includes only part way opening the door if I need the ventilation while I'm working in there. I don't worry about my neighbors, but i do have concerns about construction crews, service people and other "drive by's" getting too curious.  I have lots of parts boxes stacked up near the garage door that would be at risk if curious eyes became sticky fingers.

Actually I forgot, I was that guy once. My brother and I saw a triple white Barracuda convertible at a car wash in Topeka kansas one time. We pulled in and talked to the genlmtleman for a while and expressed our interest in buying it should he ever want to part with it and gave him our contact info. He said he didn't plan to sell it. I don't mind people asking , just p*sses me off when they have no idea what the car even is.
Last week a college kid follows me to the golf course and jumps out of his brand new Camero ranting about he wants my car, how much?
I tell him him it's not for sell and he continues.
The private college is full of kids from the Middle East spending daddy's money and enjoying the US life style and this kid is obviously used to getting what he wants.
So I tell him, I'll sell it to you for $30k, he laughs and says no way it's worth that.
I just look at him and ask, what'd you pay for that Camero?
He didn't like that and jumped back in his car and sped off.

Since at least one of my Mopars has also been my daily driver over all of the last 10 years they spend a decent amount of time outside- out driving around, at the gas station, parking lots, etc. I got more notes and things on my Challenger than I get on my Duster, which is kinda funny because the Duster is a much cleaner car. I actually think I got more notes on my Challenger because it looked a little rough after the clear coat failed, so maybe more people thought they could probably afford it. I definitely got some lowball offers!

Most of that stuff I don't mind, I've gotten a few notes that were practically letters, full on stories about how the person owned one back when and all about that car. Kinda cool.

The only ones I can't stand are the rich jerks that don't take "it's not for sale" as an answer. Like they can just buy whatever the crap they want because they've got money. Well, maybe I'm dumb but I don't care. If I say it's not for sale, it's not for sale. I didn't stutter, it doesn't mean I'm trying to drive up the price. It means I'm not selling my car to you. Maybe I think you're a douchebag, and your money doesn't deserve my car. Or maybe I just don't want to talk about it at the gas station. Either way, you're not driving off in my car no matter what you offer, so tough.

The other thing I think is funny is all the "you can't take it with you" comments. Well, you can't take your money with you either. Or anything else you'd buy with that money, it's ALL just stuff. So really that doesn't mean anything. I drive my old muscle cars for thr experience of doing it. That's not worth some amount of money to me, and what it is worth isn't really tied to the monetary value of the car. Yeah sure I will probably sell some of my cars, a couple of them sooner rather than later if I was smart because I have too many projects. And hopefully I won't ever have to sell any of them because I need the money.

With any luck I'll sell the last couple of them only when I can't physically drive them anymore, and at that point the money will probably just pay for my care home anyway.  :D

If you have ever seen the movie Gran Torino - at the end the niece thinks she will get the car?

This is the kind of mentality that I hate, don't come onto my property and try to get aggressive with me and lowball me on what I have. Some folks try, all folks leave with their hat in their hand.

Yep! Had one slid under my garage door a week ago.

Funny part is they never ask about my finish restored 68 Mustang. LOL

You guys are nuts....if someone wants to "buy your car".....tell them a price that's double the value, remember you have the upper hand...they may laugh or they may bite.....SELL IT...... :alan2cents:

That's not always a great strategy... A friend of mine had a MINT '67 Shelby Cobra 427 Side Oiler, all original, low miles.. One day at a show a guy asked him what it'd take to sell it. At the time the car was worth $250K.. He said $450K and the guy said "I'll take it"... 15 years later that car is currently worth ~$2 million.

Another friend had ~$40K in an old Hot Rod, guy asked him how much, he said $150K and the guy said sold... He STILL regrets selling that car.

I have had people ask me "how much?".  I always respond with "make me an offer I can't refuse.  And don't offend me while you do it".  That usually shuts most people down.  I actually had a guy offer me about half of what it is worth.  I told him that he was clueless about the market and should keep his mouth shut about things he doesn't know about.

I think if anyone asks me again, I will throw out a big $ number and see what happens.  What if they really had the money?  I could see myself driving another dream car.  Im sure I would regret selling my Cuda, but there are soooo many ultra cool cars that can make that feeling feel far away.

Restorers will get a kick out of this comment.  My neighbor a few blocks over who has a 1970 Challenger 340, TKO, FiTech, etc has stopped by two more times to talk shop. He asked "when are you going to sell me your 68 AMX"? I made the mistake his 1st visit of telling him how much I'm in it, not knowing he wanted it. I said make me a generous offer. He said, I'll give you how much your in it seeing as how you are still above water. I said, its gone up in value the past few years and I've spent close to a hundred hours in it rebuilding the engine and replacing the brakes, rotors, fuel tank and pump, etc. He replied with, Oh you don't get paid for that, the hours or all the extra hard work.  :crazytalk:
