I've been asked for specs on the M46 scoops. Mounting studs, screws and nuts.
I'm not sure of the thread sizes yet but I will go to the hardware store and use their screw gauge to get the exact threads on the studs and the screws.
I've only been able to get one complete screw and three nuts from the scoops I own. I removed the two scoops that had the one screw and three nuts.
There are two different types of metal that the rubber is mounted to. There is standard metal and there is aluminum. I do have one scoops that appears to be aluminum but is not silver like the other aluminums I have. It has a golden tent to the aluminum. Not sure if that one with the golden sheen is a different metal or if it is just discolored.
I have one set of scoops that did not receive the two studs. The round blank spots are in place but no studs were molded into the metal blanks on the inside of the rubber.
Aside from those two scoops every scoop I have seen received two studs on the top front and rear of the scoop.
All scoops have 4 holes on the bottom,3 holes on the lower front and one hole on the lower rear.
2 of the front holes would have a 1" course thread phillips screw and the one lower rear hole would have a 1" course thread phillips screw. There is one hole that is slightly larger than the other three lower holes that did not get a screw. I believe it was to release water or moisture.
the metal backed scoops all have rust and most have bubbled the front visible side of the scoop. The aluminum backed scoops have stayed in really good condition with little to no bubbling on the front side.
However, the aluminum scoops do not hold their top studs well at all. Most are broken or pulled through. Most of the metal backed scoops have their studs intact.
All the lower phillips screws I have seen are rusted and very difficult to remove from the body metal.
These scoops are dated to 9-69

should have bought this car. Was a donor car for a 71 cuda. My first set of scoops. Owner didn't even know he had them. I finally got the trunk opened and there they were.
These are both metal backed.

Don't have them off the car yet so no better pictures than this.
By far the best scoops I have is an aluminum scoop with blue paint on the rear.
I believe it to be from a B5 car.
Aluminum backed.
It was used to make an early mold from the gentleman who remakes these.
this scoop is the golden colored aluminum backed scoop.
Here are some measurements for the stud placements and the 1" phillips screw placement.
More measurements
And this is a scoop that I purchased as a single. It's in really bad shape as visible on the front. The rust has just eaten up this scoop.
And another scoop that is in pretty poor condition. It's been hit and damaged
first pic is a comparison of the scoop with no studs and another scoop with studs.
The following pics are some profile pictures.
And finally a rough scoop that has some gold paint drips on the rear.
Aluminum backed.
Nice collection.
So Josh,
How many scoops you have?
Enough to put Raisin Bran outta business? :haha:
Not enough. I only have one scoop in good enough condition for a restoration. ( thanks a thousand times to Vlad)
Ridiculous to say how much cash I have sunk into purchasing these scoops I have.
Not trying to brag in anyway. Just want to put the information out there for those others who have these cars and are looking for these scoops.
If someone has a pristine passengers side I would be interested and will pay fair market value on the scoop.
Nice looking scoop I must say
Great post for future reference! Good job Josh! :bravo:
I just read through this entire thread, great job documenting a very rare piece that few people even know exist. Maybe we can get this into our reference section.
thanks. Just trying to share the knowledge since there is no other information about these out there.
Awesome read and very well discribed on the overall of these unique scoops and dare i say sought after optioned Barracudas for future collectors. I believe M46 Barracudas could become a desirable collector car for guys looking to have that unique car in their personal collections, such a rare opportunity to find what M46 Barracudas are left to be saved could not be more important than to start the hunt as Josh has already started the quest for the rest of us to follow.
I personally have one of these illusive M46 Barracuda of my very own and know how hard it is to even find information and references towards these cars and appreciate how much time and passion Josh has put in to this post. Thanks Josh for sharing.
I would love to see one of these cars done with like an OE Gold type resto.... :)
Thanks Ken! Glad to see ya made it in here long enough for a post! Stick around!
Moparal's fc7 is the closest I've seen of a restoration.
Dwight Righnt (correct my last name spelling if wrong) AKA M46Rrat has a few original specimens I believe that are in truly great shape. But I have yet to get a bunch of good pictures of any one of them.
I'll attach the best pics i have of ole Al's. Hope he's doing ok.
Al's car was a 42K original mile car. 318 originally. locked in a garage since 1975. I believe he purchased it in 2005 out of Arizona. Very little to zero rust car. He put the car back to as close to original with the exception of the drive train. I do not have any info on the original drive train. I do know that the fender tag has a 13 stamped into the top right side of it like an inspectors stamp. The inspectors tag you can see on the right side of the tag has a stamp of AR but I do not have a picture of that. The 13 and AR are raised stamps and not perforated stamps.
I will contact Al and see if maybe, just maybe he has any pictures of the original car. I doubt it but it's worth a try. Al is a great guy and loves the mopar's.
Al's original 318 was not with the car when he purchased it. He installed a date correct 440.
These pictures were taken from a dealership that had the car for sale after Al sold it to someone else.
Al was gracious enough to sell me a lone scoop that he had after the restoration, the worst scoop in the pics I shared, for 832.00.
I have been here for a long time by the looks, but it has been a long time posting. I will pop in and out when i can and will start a build thread soon if i can get the parts i need to restore my own M46 :fingerscrossed: . Or start on my 71 Challenger Convertible.
Super informative I will probably be coming back to this post on and off again while doing my build
Thanks for taking the time to post this,
As for mine, I still have to find studs to permanently attach to mine

:Stirring: wouldn't it be cool if someone discovers a stash of NOS M46 scoops, read this post, and they end up with Josh!
I'd be happy with a set of nos ones! Not the whole stash! I'm fine with sharing.
That would be awesome. I"m always hoping for a set of NOS.
Wow! Is there any other info at all on the car or it's past? Or it's whereabouts?
It appears to be a read stripe car and have an argent grill.
Are those v5x mouldings on the side?
Crappy looking aftermarket fog lights.
Hood pins were added.
I thought I searched fall of your m46 threads.
I missed this one.
Did you really pay that much for a blistered single scoop?
That black paint at the bottom of the car... was that only for M46 cars? It looks good but I can't recall ever seeing that before.

Yup, only part of the M46 package as far as I know

Yes, yes I did. And I purchased it from a good man who would have given it to me for cheaper if he had purchased it for cheaper.
The first purchase is always the most expensive and most sought after. I was prepared to pay my way into the scoop information.
I'm surprised these aren't reproduced. Seems in todays age could digitally scan one, make a reverse for the other side, then 3-D print away...
I purchased this scoop this year at Carlisle.
About 20 weeks ago on the ebodies.org facebook group a fell named Gary Thomas on March 6th listed a single drivers side scoop with no price. He said he would price them in a few days but if someone wanted to offer him a reasonable price he would sale. I pm'd him and tried to get an idea of what he wanted for the one scoop. Since I didn't throw him an offer directly we did not come to a price for the scoop.
Skip forward to Carlisle this year. Apparently, he brought the scoop to carlisle and then sold the scoop to DJ, the aar guy out of Ohio. DJ put them on a florescent green big piece of paper so the scoop would not be missed.
A good member here contacted me while at carlisle and told me about another member here that had the location. I finally got the location and showed up first thing Saturday morning to purchase this scoop. I'm sure I paid an up charge from whatever Gary got rid of the one scoop for as DJ specifically said he has to make something on the scoop. I paid up and purchased the scoop.
It is rusty. Has rust spots coming through the front unfortunately. Typical for the metal backed scoops.
Have you ever talked to Tommy The Chryco about having these made out of the same material he makes the Cuda bumpers out of ? or even repaired ?

Cuda Hunter, I also tried multiple times to come to an agreement with Gary Thomas....

hahaha. At least I know it wasn't just me. Have you found a set of scoops yet?

Actually no. I even chatted with mr. chryco at the show. Didn't even cross my mind. :bricks:
Good idea. Will pursue that conversation.
My personal plan, is to have a cnc guy I know make me a set of these out of aluminum.
But that is why I'm trying to find one NOS scoop. Know of anyone? I know of one, but I can't seem to get in contact with him.
Wow looks to be in pretty good condition!
This may never come to fruition, but on my busy schedule I've been working on making some 3d files for these scoops, my files were corrupted buy eventually I'll get back to getting these models mocked up
They were reproduced by Scott smith with Harm's auto.
If I can find an NOS set, I'm going to do at least one set of aluminum's.
Then go from there.

Nice. Is that scanned off of the Harm's reproductions?
Yes they are... hoping to get new scans and remodel them a bit, and see about getting them 3d metal printed

Question does anyone know if the tail panel got blacked out with the M46 package? I always thought barracudas had argent paint on tail panels unless it was ordered with rubber rear bumper.
Yes, All M46 barracuda's received a blacked out panel.
Gran Coupe's had a silver tail panel
Standard, non M46 optioned Barracuda's got a colored tail panel.
I think that's correct.
if it loads heres a slightly better rendered version
Scoop installation details
The bottom holes would be dictated by the scoop being installed with the two top studs.
Then the phillips screws would hold the bottom of the scoops on through the 4 holes.
A few more
The stripes are centered 4" from the bottom of the door.
Centered at 8" from the bottom body line.
Would love to see one with these in person.

Apparently, the only known one that comes to car shows is at this car show that happens every week between Memorial day and Labor day. https://georgieporgies.com/summer-car-shows/

I have not, I have come to the conclusion I will be making them. I think I have enough details with the pictures I have.
Just wish I had at least one as a sample....
I do have them somewhat mocked up...
Looking pretty cool!
I see a CNC run of a few of these scoops in the future.
Had to rethink how I was going to make thesse after making a one out of sheet metal. I started with rod and made a frame. Not sure if I'm going to use sheet metal or Fiberglass to finish it.
Quote from: cuda hunter on December 07, 2023, 05:43:26 AM@N2MOPAR Any progress?
Yup, All Done. Turned out Pretty Wicked. Needless to say, I have a few hours into these...
I actually found an OEM one AFTER I built mine. These were made from pictures I gathered over the years.
Nice to see the comparison...
Those look really good! Thanks for the update!
And only a couple of hours into them. Impressive.
@N2MOPAR Could you post a few pictures of the rear of your custom scoops as well as a few rear shots of the original scoop?
I am curious if the original scoop is an aluminum or metal backed scoop.
Any information on the car it came off of? Even if it's just an "I scrapped it" story?

LOL, when I say a few hours I mean dayz....
Original scoop is aluminum backed and very flexible.
@N2MOPAR those look amazing did you happen to have more pictures of the back and where the studs or holes are at?
