Title: Parcel speaker shelf - insulation?

Was there any sort of insulation between the board and the metal?

Yes. There are 2 styles of the package tray insulation . One if you have speakers and one for those who did not.
Also available for the headliner, firewall,

It seems the original was rather thin and not so 'fluffy'.
I purchased the item from DMT and because i also have a rear window defrost, the fluffiness made it a bit more wavy around that vent than i would like.

I believe on 71' and on non speaker rears; it was a 1/4" tar like type of cardboard. 
A thin, recycled cloth fiber material on those with Speakers...possibly.  :thinking:
