Title: Drag Week 2017 wooot!
Post by: Marc70challenger on March 04, 2017, 06:32:29 PM
They said last year sign up closed out in 20 minutes.

So at noon today (EST) ... well ... 1140am ... I was poised at desk, constantly refreshing the page waiting for the link .. 1203p I hit the submit button and get the "congratulations ... " screen.

This year sign up closed out in 6 minutes ... holy crap ..http://www.hotrod.com/articles/registration-goes-live-march-4-hot-rod-drag-week-2017-presented-gear-vendors/

Motor and build should be done mid to end April.  Then get as much seat time and testing as we can before Sept!!!   Excited as hell ... got good friend from up North coming along - gonna be blast!!!

Thanks everyone!  My wife - and trying to get youngest son, will follow along.  We'll try our best to get timely stuff up.  And Ive had a GoPro now for a year ... once I get it out of the package and read a little I should be able to use it ....

HotRod also runs a live feed each day and 1320 on YouTube does a daily re-cap - mostly though of the rocket sleds running under 8.0 seconds   :veryexcited:    Low 10s are a dime a dozen  :driving:

I've got a build thread on another "A-body" website ... didn't want to polute the E-body website with that old ugly fish thing ...  :P

But here's general overview:

Long to short

We've been working on car since October. I completely re-wired it, installed Speedwire relay and switch panels, Painless relays for all lights and accessories, horn, turn signals and flashers to get it registered for street

383 stroked to 431, Ross pistons, H beam rods, Scat 4340 crank, Harland rocker arms, solid roller, Melling oil pump, and Edelbrock Victor intake.

Trick Flow heads - 6161T784-C00. Combustion chamber 78cc/240cc intake runner/74cc exhaust runner /2.190" intake valve diameter/1.760" exhaust valve diameter
W
Camshaft Howards Cams - 721883-08. DURATION: 263/269 (in/ex) at 050, advertised 295 int/301 exh, LIFT .675/.650, LSA 108 degrees, valve lash .022"

To finish off: Meziere relocated (radiator mounted) water pump, 170 amp Mechman alternator, and Ultimate 16 Roller Sprag (Super Sprag), valve body with LBA, & a steel front drum Tech 5.0 EFI (rail). Also will take look at trans (refresh with Ultimate 16 Roller Sprag (Super Sprag), valve body with LBA, & a steel front drum) and install JW ultra bell SFI on trans.

Few pics post in "what are you building thread". https://forum.e-bodies.org/your-restoration-project/10/what-are-you-building-right-now/32/msg8670#msg8670

New pics of incoming stuff. (If the pics are sideways, let me know ... sometimes from iPad they post funny .. lol )

Quick update. Things moving along with car.

Brakes: new pads and rotors, and replaced all lines and fittings.

Suspension: Cal Trac single mono (-1) with ladder bar and shocks installed. New 90/10s on front. Stance certainly has changed.  :o

Moved to using new TF 270 heads over 240s. And ATI Supercase Pro TH400 with transbrake. (Apologies to purists  :please: )

For what started out as "hey, let's build a budgeted, moderate drag/strip car" has turned into ... well ... y'all know the story.

And, of course, being a Mopar, with a motor not designed for the car and a stroked 383 B block to boot ...   :crazytalk:

But hey ... it is a Mopar, and motor and a neat platform ... so what the hell.

We're traveling for biz now. Hope to have it running mid May. Want as much time to work out kinks for road trip and street. And some track time of course.

Best of all, @Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12) will be joining us. Really looking forward to the whole drag week experience with great dude and buddy. I'm putting in another fan inside though. Heaven knows how hot that little cars is going get inside in the summer with us two tooling around the Midwest.

Some not-so-great pics.

Edit:  again with pic orientation. Lol.  Fix if i can get o computer. iPad today

Updates/additions:  Magnaforce k-member, coilovers, new front 4 piston brakes, and rack going in along with GearVendors. I owe my sweetheart of a wife a 5-speed for her '57 now.   at least.

When we get home in a few days, I'll be heading over every day I can to wrench with em and help.  Need this puppy on road asap and moving.  :burnout:

Will get some pics.

@Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12) if the kids haven't found it yet, 1320 videos has daily wrap up and other story stuff from drag week. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkekz7OLX4Q4e8wNwa96ikr1dGP5nR2A9  His other stuff is pretty cool too

True.   half the guys got done waiting in tech line

We've got plenty of time. I'm just impatient.  :veryexcited:  Magnaforce says 3-4 weeks til we get there stuff. So I say 6. . But all else should be done and in well before.  We can even do custom headers (fender well) and put motor in (engine plate) before.

I should get some pics Friday.   :takepicture:  It's no prob. Want to document the build. In the past I've been too lazy to do it and wish I did after.  :)

Thought about bringing it to Carlilse but feel bad for the Challenger.  :looney:  that's his show.

I know!   :wrenching:  be fun as hell!

Got off the plane after a 14 hour flight, dropped off the suitcases and headed to the shop.  :lurking:

Another saga of the Mopar world. The foundry that makes SFI bellhousings for the 5 major hd trans builders isn't doing their Mopar run until late June. Our guy hunted down a Reed bellhousing and ATI had a template to grind their casing to fit it (I guess GM used that combo for one of their Camaros ... and brother of shop owner also is sponsored by. ATI ... so that helped. Lol. )

Tunnel cutting looks done ... so hopefully get that done and start plumbing fuel system next week.  Along with bunch little crap - trailer wiring harness, engine bay paint, license plate light, interior light to LED, trunk light, etc.

Let me see if these pics won't post sideways. Lol

Edit: I see I missed the memo on taking landscape photos on iPhone. Lol. I'll fix on desktop this weekend and add more.

Some more pics. Oriented correctly.

The front valence is going all black eventually.   :cooldance:

All stuff out now for Magnumforce stuff.

Tunnel and trans mount done. Picked up some AR rims for street - Centerline look.  Started on fuel system. Blacked out front valence.

You're making good time.  Getting a lot done with plenty of time to spare.  You have until September, right?
Title: Re: Drag Week 2017 wooot!
Post by: Marc70challenger on May 26, 2017, 05:35:48 PM
Thanks. Yes, Drag week is early September.   Realistic estimation now is first week July. Need to really test it on street - engine, trans temp .. stuff like that so no surprises. Then track tuning.  Plus I need practice. Lol. Been long time - and quite slower car since I made last hit.  :veryexcited:

Title: Re: Drag Week 2017 wooot!
Post by: Marc70challenger on July 06, 2017, 07:42:06 PM
Well   First week of July has turned into 1st week August most likely. Could be sooner. Everything has turned into a buy it, modify it, and figure it out deal. Lol.  Even seat mount took 3 days.  :drunk:

Engine is just waiting on custom pushrods and balancer.  Trans, GV and front rack should be in next week.

We're thinking things should pick up. At first it didn't seem like a lot with the little detail stuff - but I've been at shop almost everyday doing what I can do along with their guys ... and it's a lot.  ::).   :wrenching:   Essentially the only thing not touched will be the Dana rear.

In interim I decided turn the 8-point into a 10- point cage that will be certified (while you're at it thing) and with swing outs.

So pumpkin won't make it to Carlilse but we've got another Mopar.  :burnout:

Oh. Decided to "Wraith" the front valence ... some may get it.  :veryexcited:

And did a little work on valve covers. Going to put logo of shop on

Some pics.

Hopefully Friday we crank him over.  Some pics to catch up

Headers tacked and all set to be welded. Cooling system all in. All wiring set to hook up just a couple things on harness left to pin. Hope to finish hooking up fuel system tomorrow, fan and alt.

Will try to hit a track rental couple weeks, then local event weekend before Drag Week - then westerly bound.  :burnout:

2 plus weeks of typical - harness in, harness out, ground again here/there/everywhere ... trans in, trans out, ooo - that shook loose, etc, etc.    But it's running consistent and strong!

Like @Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12) said - gonna need some ear plugs for the road ....

@Cuda Cody (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/cuda-cody_1) asked me to post some videos.

Won't have much during race week ... so here's catch up of build.  :cooldance:

Thanks Charlie and Killer!  Been quite an experience with this build. Engine builder (and shop owner) is about best builder and tuner in our area ... and I'd put him up against anyone else anywhere.

His brother (and fellow racer - both been racing since they were kids) runs the shop and they were kind enough to let me join "the build team" ... I've spent just about every day there for past 10 weeks lol. Pitching in where I can and learning a TON.  Only thing that wasn't touched was the Dana rear - except for inspection and fluid change.

If you think it will take X time - double it. If you think it will cost Y - triple it.  If they say they will ship it in Z days - quadruple it.  Electrical engineering classes I took I wish I paid more attention - lol. Proper welding is an art. Nothing can substitute for experience ...  I could go on and on and on.

And best thing I learned was fellow racers will give you the shirt off their back if you need it ... we were having a fit with the FT for a week ...decision was made to switch to FAST (they've been working with FAST since it was run on DOS) .... but with shipping time it was critical now - one guy gave me his harness and box from his car at home, another a bunch of sensors of his race car at the shop ... just everyone doing anything to make it happen ... couldn't be more grateful.  Real solid guys.

Hey Mark, Ian here. Man, I can't believe I haven't seen this thread before right now! What a cool car and what a thrash to get it on the road! Wish I'd've known about it when we were yakking in Carlisie. If I'm reading the thread correctly you and Brad should be on your way. Best of luck and you've got a great fabricator/machinist/sidekick sitting beside you. Hey @jimynick (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/jimynick_55) Ian!! Thanks man. Was quite an oddessy. Lol. And now another starts.

We're leaving for Cordova probably Friday now.  Take time loading and making sure we kit the trailer right we're pulling with Barracuda. Arrive early Saturday morning - chill, get cold valve lash reading (checked and adjusted today hot @ .022) and meet some buddies rolling in.

Will try post some pics as we roll during week. I definitely get some videos.

Hotrod.com does a daily live feed. You can see the repertoire of cars and hits.

Got her all cleaned up yesterday.

We got up at 4am - Our group had heard of 4am but wasn't too familiar. (Brads words).  Tech started at 8am.

Got in tech line early and we were out by 1030.  They opened track by 11am. First run was motor run - shifting 6500 and ran 12.22 at 109 mph. Second run ran it up to 7k - 11.17 at 125mph.  All foot braking .. 60 ft of 1.9.  So leaving a ton on line/launch.

Been 26 years since last time on a track. And never had transbrake before ... so will give few more runs before hitting the button. But will be interesting what that gets us.

Few pics here. Try to get GoPro in car tomorrow - but our pick-up truck is at local dealership (won't start). So tomorrow will be fun trying to makes runs, wife dealing with how she will follow in what, etc.    what a CF. lol

Rolled in to hotel about 8p local. Took us about 7 1/2 hours for 250 miles. Thing drinks gas. Lol. Fun ride.

First hit this morning only ran 11.6.  with 126 mph. I crept trying to footbrake - didn't red light. But it messed up launch.  Will just use trans brake tomorrow.

We were going to try again but the alternator crapped out. Had a spare and we replaced it. It was charging so we didn't want to risk frying that one and in a pickle for the drive. So turned in that first slip.

Tomorrow we may just take belt off for the runs. It has a 2.5 ratio pulley which should be fine. But we know it's fine for drive.  So ....

Oh. The truck fried its bcm. They said f350s are known to leak in door frame and fry them.  NO recalls.  But they give wife a rental   Lol.

I'm so jealous of you right now.  Sounds like a trip of a lifetime.  Thanks for the update.  I think you have a good plan to remove the belt for the runs and just put it back on to drive and charge the system.  If you have a battery charger you could use that between rounds too.

We have a jump box.  No charger. But I would think a run or two wouldn't drain it that bad.  We'll find out. Lol.  Thanks Cody!

Ya. That and using trans brake. Lol

The 40$ "back up" 60 amp alternator made the run today and held up all during drive yesterday and today. About 540 miles. The 200$ high amp "built to race" alternator is the one that cropped out.

We got some video of drive and the hit. Will put together when get home.

Thanks everyone for kind words.  :thankyou:

No prob. Glad to share. This is a blast but it's grueling. Just spectating last year I didn't give it much thought. But the long days, humping equipment, driving a car like that, then the maintenance etc.

@Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12)      been a savior.

This morning we found GV leaking (long to short - over tightened under cover ... GV owner got us a replacement) Had to check that. Changed oil.  Found alt not charging after the run.  Swapped out to third one.  Third one too low amp output.

Hers pic 4th swap out. Lol.

We prob just take belt off tomorrow. 4th one ran fine on road.

Hi all, having a blast. Drag racing is different from circle track racing I've learned. Mark had to tell me to relax a few times and that its not a pit stop lol. Getting good at swapping out alternators.  Seems the old girl is not fond of chevy parts haha. Sure loving Wisconsin.  What a beautiful state. Never been here before. Here are a few pictures I managed to take.

Thanks all!  Ya. Poor @Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12)   Lol.   Even last year as a spectator I didn't appreciate the work, stress and exhaustion of this.  He's been a trooper and really critical to keeping us going.

Some pics. Fog in morning.

I've got a good video of the run today from inside.  I'll get those on YT when we get home.

For sure !  Find us!  Racing starts at noon. Street eliminator runs first. So our class probably won't run til 2p or later.

We prob find a "pit" on the grass across from all stored trailers   I'm going to try to get near taller trees in the middle of the rear graSs area. I'd imagine about where they draw line between pits and spectator parking.

Not best camera video.  But got the launch. 2-step set at 3k.  I've got computer and going to see if we can up that !  Trap mph is too high for that ET. Need much better 60 ft.

Some pictures .... I really loved the silver Auzzie Charger. The technology in this car blows me away. Over 500 cid preditor heads. Twin turbos...etc..... owner was nice said it cost him 40 thousand to ship the car from Australia.  He builds engines there and has 3 more Chargers restored.

Last night I grabbed a cheap laptop so we could communicate with the FAST. Had the builder on the phone and sent him the logs. We tried a some new launch settings off the 2 step. Did same after first of 3 runs today (best of 11.09 @126).  Just not getting her off line near to potential.

Figure we need to work on spec'ing different convertor. 60 foot is 1.8's and trapping 126+ says we're off.  And after shifts - tried between 7000 up to 7800, the rpm dropping 2k .... too much.

At that trap speed and motor power we should be 11.5 or less easy.    We just had no time for track work.

But most important part is we made the 1,000 mile drive over 5 days. And had a blast.  Thanks so much to Brad!

I'll get videos as soon as can when we get home. The truck was suppose to be fixed Friday.  We picked it up and in 5 minutes acted up again.  We will get it tomorrow and head on 860 mile trip back home.  Lol. We'll see ....

This has been super fun to watch and follow on.  Congratulation on finishing it and making it the whole way.  Nice job to you both.

The 1.8 60 foot times do seem really slow for your set up.  Once you get it dialed in it should be much better.

IIRC, the Chevelle with the turbos through the hood was pulled out of a field a couple years ago. They got it running just in time for drag week. That year it was running in the 15's. The next year it showed up with the turbos. It just goes to show you that it doesn't need to be pretty to be fast.

I really liked the Ford wagon with LS turbo power. A few times it got some big air. Total sleeper.

Thanks guys. We missed on the convertor - by a bit. Trying to keep the street in mind and as priority - was hard to "guess" with no runs down the track.  We'll get it boogieing soon. Lol.  Should be less than 10.4 easy.

Special thanks to @Brads70 (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/brads70_12)   Had a blast and was great !

Just threw this together tonight.

Thanks everyone!  We were too busy tech and first day so really didn't get any video. Then had mount on the dash as you can see. Then finally duct taped a mount to cross bar to get view inside. Lol

@blown motor (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/blown-motor_52)   I use Adobe Premiere Pro. I have the suite for work.  It can be expensive. There are plenty of free ones - but they re limited. Corel has decent editing software and it's only like 40$. Or less on sale, and it's a good introduction into higher end video editing software. Also - doesn't GoPro come with basic editing tool ... I think Microsoft does as well.
