Title: Welding in Cuda Gill Louvers
Post by: 70 Challenger Lover on June 13, 2022, 07:50:14 AM
I'm sure a few of you have done this or had it done but I want to add gills to my 71 Barracuda hardtop. What method is easiest and will hold up for many years?  I know I can butt weld in the inserts. My welding skills are decent now but definitely far from professional and I'm using a mig rather than a tig most experts seem to prefer.

I was considering creating a flange around the opening hoping the insert would sit more flush and require less body work prior to painting. I'm a little nervous about warping if I try to butt weld but from watching videos, all I see are butt welds.

Advice appreciated.

I would butt weld it, and cut the inserts about a 1/2" from the holes, the pressings around the holes would stabilise it a bit, it would still need some hammer and dolly work afterwards I think. I TIG weld, but you can do it with a MAG also.
