Title: misc engine parts
Post by: GoMangoBoys on December 24, 2020, 01:43:34 PM
We are building a stroker from our 383 block.  We bought a 478 CU IN  kit from Hughes Engines.  4.15" stroke w/ 30 over pistons.  We will be starting assembly in the next week or so.  I still need to get some misc parts.  I am looking for some advice.  I have only built a few engines before .  Chevy small block and VW.  Never a Mopar.  I need an oil pump drive shaft. I am thinking of buying this one.  https://www.manciniracing.com/oilpudrasbrg1.html

I am also considering this damper  https://www.manciniracing.com/brbengine1.html

I need an oil pickup.  I am using the Milodon 30760 oil pan.  I have a windage tray.  I am considering this oil pickup, but I don't know what I don't know.  https://www.manciniracing.com/mop19ben.html
Thanks

You do not need a bronze gear on the oil pump shaft unless you are running a billet cam. For a harmonic dampener that will work but you can certainly find them cheaper than a fluid dampener. I am using one from 440 source. Half the price. Don't use that oil pickup. Get the one made for the pan by Milodon. They need to match each other.

I am not familiar with your cam choice but any roller cam is billet & Needs the bronze drive .
I agree on the damper just get a plain steel damper
I would run a Melling HP Not HV oil pump .

The Milodon 30760 oil pan is supposed to be a stock replacement for an e body.  They really don't say what oil pickup to use with it whereas they DO say what pickup to use with others that they sell.  So, I guess I need a stock oil pickup.  I AM running a 4.15" stroke and a windage tray.  Can someone point me to a stock oil pickup that is good?

As for the damper, again, who sells a good steel damper?

I can buy this oil pump drive at Summit.  Any good?  https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mel-is-63/make/dodge/model/challenger/year/1970

My advice "who really am I ?"[ Contact the people with skin in the game, the companies that make these parts. They all have tech depts for just this reason. DYI people. Going to run a Hughe's kit ? Contact Hughe's to find out what combination of parts they recommend with their kit. They have a vested interest in your success. Contact the other manufacturers, not the part sellers about their recommendations. These companies are interested in selling more parts to you and your friends. People on line just have their personal likes. If it goes wrong they won't help you./font]

Remember my Milodon gear drama?

Milodon rep didn't give a Rats Ass with only 2 grand miles ran.
Killed a distributor as well.

So much for mfg'rs interest.

If you haven't already got the pan consider getting the 30761 instead... It's Milodon's clone of the 440-6 & Hemi pan.... There are cheaper Sixpack pans but the Milodon pan is very well made...

The 30760 is a 4 qt + filter pan... The 30761 is a 6 qt + filter pan....
