Title: 70 Challenger (someday)

Here's some photos of where I started and as I get more posted hopefully it will help keep me motivated to make this into a drivable car someday.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/c44663d08c45545a31f3655fba8a719f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/829202c00505698087ef2bcb189ef831.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/f61a5e8a9d2fd78d78251cb3e0e5405c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/77587978738cb99cc166e1296d4c5748.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/86779d054e66290ad839d49c8975cbc8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/b390a5e57f9547d4ae313c68e93e64f0.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/dc529c3bdd03872b625b0c1336ff2396.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/b06b34859a67915e5d387ac09e43d4a8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/9f8dc7638a1ba3202ab54a605eef6b3e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/64fc1fde6de38c7f79528fb4cd8bb3d6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/a452fc30e168ff17a14622bef94a78e8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/3be0412a7d66c57f23f7cd98f6f70d8f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/c41eca0cb59f81607de75f586ab58bde.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/e3b54577e540052fd1dc3b9bf40a6a1c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/bcf9c11f302727e8e219c6dc5d285ecc.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/9961299f2b3ebe980e4fb14a97d3da3a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180128/12f9652a22e46c19d6cfce9ee72a3ae3.jpg)

Not sure if you are looking for advice and I am no expert, but I would get in contact with a media blaster and have them blast the challenger and blast the parts so you can start fresh.  It takes forever to clean up old parts and you can save time and focus that time elsewhere if the parts get cleaned up by a media blaster.   :handshake:

For sure. Time is money. And it will reveal all. Which can save money and time and sanity.

Good luck !

You're making nice progress in a relatively short time.   What plans, if any, do you have around adding some frame stiffening like subframe connectors?   I made my life a bit more complicated by deciding late to add the stiffening components.   Everything I used was from US Car Tool - good stuff.

No plans for any frame work at this time. That's some more project I'm not even thinking about... ill probably be happy If it's ever a driveable car I can take down the road.

I got a deal on this I just couldn't pass up. I really didn't like those blue rocker cover hold downs so I made a set from 6061 aluminum. When I changed  To a center sump oil Pan I noticed the timing gears and I really didn't want that either so Itgot a nice double roller chain.  Then there is a little modification for the oil pick up... the block was drilled for 1/2"inch pick up so I just modified the one I had.[emoji16][emoji482](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/b3e9995665cce373f889af3fa5bb7e60.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/6ffd6669bc566537bb65f9cb8c163387.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/2a377d15ee2f3ce1faef4aabab6fcefe.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/7a9b3e9c4c4cf356c161e91cf960585e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/759fd9f32a612c1cca79ea62ce8ca84b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/56571f7ef5572bb0bfe2e9b215ece8c9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/c6997fd01f23172f10cc0dc87ba1ba18.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/e9fd72a7f6a03f953eb3b7c49ffa6506.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/154cac64673f838b4b6131d61d2305a8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/70b2519afe6d5f8dd035890c4fc7c475.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/8c64177f1afac2ec81df1d48fa694ba8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/691e9c94373b8d6df09524b169d2a725.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/9a5afa52812477fae8a9f8edb092a5dc.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/84ba067ec6c05216ba544fd1dd023652.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/03d590a66cc2d6af8653fdeb291d3bd1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180209/9344b685061fe5fa2ebbff5049ab2e30.jpg)

I have to say looking at some of the other projects here it doesn't seem like my project is as involved as I thought.
Any ideas on what the bracket circled in the last photo is for? There's one on each side. 79 T/A Used to be mine... sold it [emoji53]  to many cars not enough space. It was cool though everyone seemed to love the color. I refinished the fenders on a friend's Harley while I was trying to decide on a color for the T/A and it was so nice that I used it on  the car. It was originally their orangie kind of red.

I understand they are tie down brackets and were used as attaching points on the car during transport when new.

It won't be done by a long shot, I am hoping to have the drivetrain in and running  with the exhaust and brakes buttoned up. If I can get that done by the end of summer maybe along with some other progress I'll call it a win... these things sure get expensive.

Hey guys,
I've been slacking off a bit and starting to get moving again...
I'm looking at the steering system now, I've already rebuilt the pump and looking at  the gear box now. So I'm wondering if anyone has any info that may help me in the right direction with this box? It seems to turn pretty smooth by hand so I'm planning on cleaning it out and resealing it as it's been sitting around probably more than 20 years.

Any reason you did not mount the starter before the headers and while it was out of the car?

Yes there is...  In the event the starter ever has to come out I wanted to see if it would be possible in the car with the exhaust in place.  I haven't built one of these before and I can have that header out in about 10 minutes so I wanted to see.

Nice job on the engine install.  However, I'm glad I have a lift.  It's much easier to drop the car down over the engine and K-Member.  I love the color also.  Almost makes me wish I had painted mine that color.  Good luck with the starter.

Thanks, I only had to loosen the header bolts for a little wiggle room to install the starter. Sure isn't going to be much fun after everything else is assembled in place.

Still moving forward. Drive shaft in, new radiator, and getting the exhaust in place.
Still not sure what I want to to with my steering?  Go through the gear box I have or just replace it. It does feel smooth turning by hand so I may give it a shot.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/24df3fa63e83a206e936b82cb04c580a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/a0b3f1fdfada102a9e7a43eca158ae15.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/37da211072601371ae372bc4f11e8348.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/c8d0eadb56380e56c3aac8f80be6ae3c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/69dc846acb11d2f0f1e6d5a66519e28f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/f5d90e99e52ac9169bb989914aab18df.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/aff5d89207c9f8ab19dbc466ecc3e01d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/d5a030612c71d109a9f9c8d19772173e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/176b055dc45170d8b6fc640406453c48.jpg)

Has anyone gone through they're power steering box? I began dissecting mine and so far I found a broken Spring. I can find it in the parts catalog for a number but I'm not sure  where i can by one? Any ideas?

Not sure where to get the spring , Dave may know , or a rebuilder like cardone
or you could upgrade to a Firm Feel stage 3 box

The more I'm thinking about it I'd be foolish not to upgrade it. So I'll probably be calling firm feel after work today.

So I finally welded up and redrilled the oversized holes in the filler tube that hold it to the body so I could install it. Now I have a question about the trim ring around the cap... am I missing something that should hold the flip cap to the trim ring and any ideas on how to hold the trim ring tighter to the body? There is a notch in the cap that lines up with a hole in the trim ring.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/95be44b78e1fb3f3089a1acd5c849fab.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/369752a4642097133933e3b44faef39e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/eafd9aa3a4cd9611ff8d4b4ea5d0114f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/646a8964a3bec7871e87c6b04bed202b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/44f924b31418ffa184ff6bfcca98e4a4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/e7493524f561210d3bfeb10d1ea0f210.jpg)

1 of two columns stripped and cleaned.
I have a column shift and floor shift that came with the vehicle. Now that the floor shift column is apart (BIG THANK YOU TO CUDA CODY for your videos!) I see it's a 1973. Firm feel said they are 3 to 4 weeks on turn time for the gearbox so I have a little time to get things together. Hey guys I could use some help with these steering column bearings... I believe I found the correct upper bearing
http://www.rosevillemoparts.com/shopping_cart.php/p/bearing-upper-steering-column-shaft-all-62-90

Or

https://www.quirkparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-bearing-2265656#gopen

Same part number but I'm not sure about the lower bearing? The one I removed has the bearing in a cast aluminum housing and the ones I'm finding are plastic looking and I could just replace the bearing itself. Any idea that may help?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180715/2ad941abe857487a8ede944fd94302b0.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180715/632e24a62766b0aad7599384e0e85390.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180715/a40fdc7c514bbab6d7d2e612427a4a9c.jpg)

There was a thread posted on cuda-challenger.com by @72bluNblu (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/72blunblu_346) which I found very helpful when I did my column, including the lower bearing.   In the thread, there's a link to a lower bearing on eBay.   The particular part has been sold, so there's also a link below for a comparable bearing that's for sale at the moment. I ended up having to use a sanding drum on a Dremel to widen the bottom of the column just a little to get the bearing to fit.

Hey guy's I hope everyone is well.

So here it is. Looks like new, Firm Feel did a real nice job. Can't wait to someday be able to actually drive this thing on the road so I can actually see how it feels. I think that natural finish is cool so it's just getting clearcoat. Awesome work your doing there.I get motivated just reading your post. Is that the original steering box to the car? I ask because I also owe a 70 challenger and have a steering box with a similar date code , I just spent $400 to rebuild it, only to learn it may not be original to the car. Thanks and keep up the awesome job.

I really have no idea if its original to this car...
I started with a shell of a car and a small pile of parts, this box was with it so I'm cleaning up and trying to use as much as I can that I got with it.
Original setup was a 225 slant 6 small rear axle and a/c.

So far I think this is not bad.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180805/5b7e9fa2947e0d0251bd416bbd5e7006.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180805/62a0261beb98a6c7aae40b5e7166c2db.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180805/d27652b8ec76b80e45f0a9927abf9614.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180805/96854db21d57a628f7b8ce937a9d490e.jpg)

In 1970 they used a 12 point 1/2 head bolt. 71+ used the standard 6 point 3/4 head.

Kind of glad I pulled the header I have a little bit of exhaust leakage. These headman headers  weren't quite flat. A little file and stone work cleaned them up a bit. A Bridgeport at home sure would come in handy once.
Probably not the most fun I could have had tonight, but it sure looks nice!

Power steering and almost power brakes...
Few more parts on order  And this thing may actually start, move, steer, and stop under its own power For the 1st time in probably 25-30 years at least.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/ccd0f754ec872ceac4f7b39b39d44938.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/6fd1cbea217cfd6bb0303e197a26ac94.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/b6664b73d026f629a9ba9e3c65aaf376.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/c61e98d5057c1cf137e19cec128372f1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180813/8f63243a3de8222806c2ba0333d98dce.jpg)

Thanks!
While waiting on parts I was looking at more parts so since I was waiting I figured I'd order more, I don't think this will ever end. One part was the  Shifter linkage torque shaft. I  Ordered new bushings while I was at it and had it apart Then I was thinking about painting some pieces and looking at where the shaft rides on the bushing it was all chewed up about .040  Kind of hard to see in the pictures I  almost just painted it but I figured I might as well  Weld it up and re machine it to size for a nice fit. That was an unplanned project.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/9d85e500244e1b99e8f71013399ce1d8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/217cab1bc939105bcda8f4a7142cca7b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/e4861f9d8c9d5a284079d5f4b03b6620.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/3a10b7e6544d23c695b84581a2319a95.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/5de39a9ae7ff554b29a8ab7310234e3a.jpg)

That was a good idea. That's the reason the slap sticks don't adjust correctly sometimes.

Yeah a little paint and these should work nicely. Definitely worth the repair time and really not that bad to do,and I really couldn't see a reason to replace the bushings if the shaft was worn.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/eb0a9a360b3ebc58b49c40db8901fbd9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/8524faa85b7217142d09a757f678ae13.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/0ae2404e13c781f6bb896262533c0bf7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180817/1a5618acc4d9d772b2fb7a59c2150928.jpg)

That is not a 70 PS box.  It's late 1973 so I believe it uses the larger pitman arm.

The steering column is also not 1970

Dupont chromabase single stage for the insides, someday the outside will get a basecoat/clearcoat.

The column is a 1973.

Powder Coating is not expensive to get into. You can buy a gun from Eastwood or HF, I have both. Main thing is the oven, which you can pick up at a Thrift Store, I was lucky enough to get a laboratory oven when my company shut down,( Dont get me started on that) Powder can be bought at many different places. But you will need a blast cabinet or know what chemicals to use. I just use the blast cabinet.

Thanks timbbuc2

I have a blast cabinet that should work and for some reason today  I started looking at ovens.

I do have another question for you guys for some reason I'm thinking I should have a 3 pin neutral park starting switch Mine is only a single pin not sure what that's all about... any thoughts? I suppose it's a different year thing? It does work.

So I'm pretty certain I can make this start, move, steer, and stop(Holy Jesus).

Check with your local body shop supply as well. We sell two different types and I did my own cars in Pro-Form brand. I don't like that it adds a bit of weight but it quietens down the car a bit. Don't forget to add it on the inside of the doors to take a bit of the rattle out when closing them.

The park reverse switch showed up... without the rubber seal so while I'm waiting on that to install it and get the exhaust back on it time to learn how to powder coat.
Made a little contraption to open the Spring to blast and spray. That color is pretty close a little dark but it's a Spring and does look pretty darn nice.

Those are the ones.  Do you recall what the sizes were?... staggered front to rear or the same.  And if they bolt right on with no modifications I should just order them now.

Will those front tires clear the fenders with a full turn?

Basically year one's response to what tires fit your rims without interference was... all cars are different you have to measure.  Now I'm sure I understand vehicles can be modified/ worn out etc... however I may just be crazy thinking if they make/sell these rims they should know what fits the vehicles factory specifications. Vs just making them and saying good luck see what fits?

Hey guys I'm working on getting the exhaust in place and I'm not sure about this rear stone guard that goes under the bumper. It came with the car and I don't know if its correct for it or not?
There's a bracket right in the center that looks like it should bolt to the body however there are no holes in the body to connect it to? Maybe it's from a different year? I am just trying to use it to position where the exhaust needs to be. I'm planning on a new one as this one is pretty beat up. Do you know if there would be any difference in the cutout locations for the exhaust tips?
I could just replace it sooner rather than later to get it right.

Sorry to cut in guys. Morty, I know the center mount is different from 70 and later. What about how it mounts to the lower quarters are there differences in stud location , actual shape in the mating surfaces. I have a 74 panel that I would have to beat with a hammer to make even close to fitting my 70 challenger. Thanks

So now I can start, stop, put in gear, (wheels turn for the first time ever since I've owned this), and the power steering works. WooHoo!! Still a lot to do like throttle and kick down linkages needed. I have to really start thinking about front seats now that it moves.
Has anyone tried new reproduction seat frames and tracks? Just about everything I seem to come across pretty much looks like trash for around $400 to $500 and will obviously need completely restored even the ones advertised as "ok for a driver" are not really usable. I'd rather use original equipment however for the price and work that has to go into a "nice" set of junk it I'm thinking new may be the way to go as it will all need to be restored/replaced anyway. Either way I'll need it all, cushions, covers, backs, tracks, etc.
Just wondering if anyone has gone that route and how it went?
