Title: 1970 727 auto trans shift seal replacement
Post by: gaddied on March 08, 2018, 06:28:18 PM
My 70 Cuda 727 shift seal is leaking . As you all know it's the one on top where the shift rod goes into.
So can I replace the seal without taking the transmission  out of the car?

No: It's a relatively easy fix. I generally swing the valve body out of the way, punch the seal up with a hammer and punch. Then I draw the new seal in using appropriate sized washers and a full thread bolt with a socket as a spacer on the bottom to pull the seal down into the cavity.

Make sure both seals are replaced, the shift and the kickdown seal

I agree however the shift shaft seal is below the fluid level & the kick down shaft is above the fluid level...

Cool, if mine ever leaks I know who to borrow the tool from... :haha:  Actually I owned the tool, loaned it to a friend, haven't seen it since...

I changed mine with that tool.
Hard part was pressing the seal back in the tight area.
I got a large c-clamp at Harbor Freight that did the trick.
