Title: Wiring questions
Post by: nsmall on April 08, 2017, 12:27:02 AM
Hello. Does anyone have any idea where this orange wire coming from the slap stick shifter it's supposed to go to?

How about the black wires near the shifter also?

Also what about the wire that coming off the wiring harness and running horizontal against the floorboard, any guess what that is?

Thanks

I have more pictures if needed. I guess I'm just asking also should I just take these wires out from the shifter area they're not doing anything.....Black and orange... They're not connected to the wiring harness but the other one that runs horizontal is.

Thanks

Look at these wiring diagrams, 4 and 5. This orange wire is for the light.

For the black, I don't know.

Orange wire is for the console light up.  The other wire looks like seat belt wiring for seat belt light

Yes, the orange wire is for the shift indicator light.  It just runs along the floor under the carpet and is held stationary with a piece of cloth tape.  It should connect to the main dash harness in the passengers side kick panel area.  The other black wires by the shifter aren't stock...someone added them.  The only wire that should be going to the console is the orange one.

The wires running side to side over the driveshaft tunnel, plug into the bottom of the front seats.  You should see plugs under the seats for those wires to connect to.  They are for the seat belt warning light.  If someone is sitting in the passengers seat, their weight pushes the metal springs down onto a thin metal strip.  That turns on the seat belt light on the dash.  I think those wires also connect to the seat belt retractors and run the seat belt buzzer.

You can see the thin metal strip on the bottom of my passengers seat...

@Burdar (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/burdar_173)

Darren, thanks for all your help as you have been very helpful to me on this site and the other one... CC

I'm not into worrying about the seatbelt light or buzzer.

As for the shifter light that sounds pretty cool.  Would the light come on when I have the headlights on/side marker lights on?

Attached are photos of the kick panel area on the passenger side but I don't see anywhere where this Orange wire to the shifter would hook into.

The last photo is of the orange wire that runs to the shifter.

Any guess what I need to do?  Any idea what these other three wires are supposed to go to?  Heater?

Thanks

There are a couple relays that mount to the passengers side of the dash frame.  I'm not sure what they are any more.(forgot)  You can see them in the above picture.  You can also see the orange wire that powers the console light.  It plugs into the orange rubber three pronged connector right by the radio bracket.  It comes out of that connector and runs through the frame and down into the kick panel area.  It looks like you have an orange wire connected to your door switch.  The door switch is the yellow wire in my picture.  Do you have the console light wire plugged into the door switch or is it just the lighting that makes that wire look orange on my computer?  Maybe you are just missing that wire.  It's not in with the rest of the dash harness.(it's a separate orange wire)

The console light should turn on when ever the dash lights are on.

@Burdar (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/burdar_173)

No you are correct the yellow wire is going to the door and the dome light does work when the door opens.

There is no orange wire on the kick panel side.

There is an orange wire going from the shifter but I need to figure out where to plug it in.

As for the black wires near the shifter I'm going to delete them as they don't  go anywhere.

I also attached a picture under the dash as maybe you can help me figure out where that orange wire is supposed to plug into.

Thanks

I circled the connector.  It looks like you already have a couple wires plugged in to it.  You should be able to run another wire and plug it in to the empty hole.

I sent a message to you but I couldn't attach photos through the messaging system.

Thanks

Keep fishing around, are you sure one of those orange wires from the plug Burdar circled isn't it. When I converted from column to console I had a bugger of a time finding the connector behind the kick panel.

My car has wires plugged into all three spots on the dash harness however, this is a good idea.  Trace those other two wires that are already plugged in and see where they go.

I still think you are just missing (1) wire.  The wire that goes from the dash harness to the kick panel.  In your PM to me, you said you already found a connector to fit the dash harness plug...you're just not finding a connector to plug into the shifter wire at the kick panel.  Any generic female spade terminal will plug into that shifter wire.  The factory just used a slightly different connector.

The factory used a female spade connector INSIDE of a male housing.  See the attached picture.  The female spade terminal has a "tab" on the side that locks it into the male plastic housing.  You don't have to use this style connection.  Like I said above, any generic female spade will plug into the shifter wire you have.  If you want the correct connection, send me a PM with your address.  I have a 6" piece of wire with the correct end on it already.  I cut it off another car.  Then all you have to do is extend that wire with a butt connector so it reaches your dash harness plug.

Look up "Packard 56 terminals".  This is the style of connector the factory used.

@Burdar (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/burdar_173)

Thanks again.  I'll continue looking for a female connector.

As for the gauge of wire...any idea what I need? Seems real thin....Maybe 16?

Thanks

Most of the orange accessory feeds were 18 gauge, so 16 would be plenty.
Take a look here:

@Burdar (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/burdar_173)

I don't know if it matters but I just had some 12 gauge wire laying around and I plugged it in and I got no light still.

I bought a roll of 16 gauge wire but I just wanted to try it out on spare wire first.

The light bulb looks fine but maybe I can try to buy a new light bulb.

Sorry I'm having a hard time giving up on this as a light on the console sounds really cool.

Just to confirm if I have my Park lights on and/or my headlights on the console light lights up?

And it doesn't matter whether it's in park or drive correct?

Thanks

Parking lights or headlights should have power on the orange feed... Is the light grounded?
Title: Re: Wiring questions

QuoteIs the light grounded?

The light grounds through the shifter.  If you have it disconnected, it isn't going to light.  You can check for power at that orange plug with a test light.  You should have power with parking light or headlights.

@1 Wild R/T (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/1-wild-rt_320)
Randy, does the shifter light dim with the dash lights?  I don't remember.

If the shifter light dims with the dash lights, then play around with the headlight switch.  You might have the lights turned down really low/off.

We are golden gentlemen.  I didn't have it grounded.

Sorry that one took so long but it works!!!!

Funny how a small victory like that really motivates me.
