Just picked up a 340 long block. Casting date of 5/30/72. It's reddish-orange. From what I've read, it should be blue, correct?
Correct.
Thanks!
has it always been Chrysler corporate blue. or, was there another name?
What was the month again in 71 where they switched from orange to blue? May/June?
it varied by plant and application (engine assembly: body - transmission - A/C?)
but:
GW340 (1971 Windsor) 340 engines are ORANGE
GM340 (1971 Mound Rd.) 340 engines are CORPORATE BLUE
Here is some more info.

:stop: proceed with caution using that list for reference
doesn't show both ORANGE & BLUE for 1971 340s
HEMIs were "race HEMI orange" thru 1968
1969 was the first year for "street HEMI orange" (used on HEMIs, 383HPs & 440HPs)
My 1971 Mounds Rd 340 that had a final assembly date of March 19,1971 was Corporate Blue..I found Blue paint on the exhaust manifold heat riser counterweight when I soaked it in Evaporust during disassembly.
The engine, original to the car, in my 71 340 cuda with SPD March 31 is a blue mound road engine. The engine assembly date is either 3500 or 3506, I can't make out the 4th digit for sure, the date would be Feb 26, 1971 or march 4, 1971.
