Title: Help with 426 Hemi block ID
Post by: Mopsquad on April 24, 2021, 06:47:29 PM
I purchased my Barracuda a few years back.  The PO invested a large sum in 2008 to build this '70 Hemi Cuda clone.  One of the large hits was the 426 engine. He stated it was an original Gen 2 Hemi. I took some pics underneath. Two areas had numbers. Can you tell me what they represent?

2468330 is the casting number for a 426 HEMI block (casting date is on the other side behind the starter)

the 2-12-70 2 is a machining or assembly date (Thursday 2/12/70) & shift or line (2)

"typical" production 1970-'71 model year HEMI engines have:
Plant (MN or NM) Displacement (426) Assembly date (XXXX) Unit number (XXXXX) - a model year (F or G) - a date like your block's

I would guess your block was an over-the-counter (NOS) block or short block assembly - is there a warranty tag/rivet/hole near one of the freeze plug bosses?

no partial VIN stamping, correct?

Thank you for that detailed info.  Is there another block location that will have ID numbers?

Look at the last photo 6bblgt posted and just above the 10 in the photo is the VIN pad.  Is your VIN pad blank?

Great. I'll look for that pad and any numbers.
