Title: Question on 10" front drums/hubs having vibration
Post by: erik70rt on September 12, 2021, 05:48:44 AM
I recently changed the front drums on my 1970 Challenger.  The old drum came off with the hubs attached and I had to press them off.  The new drums slid right onto the hubs with no pressing necessary.  The left side came out just fine, but the right side now has a little play causing a vibration when braking.  The right side drum is a little loose on the hub, but I thought installing the wheels would take out that little bit of play.  It didn't.

Has anyone else had a drum that installed a little too loosely?  How did you correct it?

Thanks!

Do you have an aftermarket set-up?   You mentioned hubs.    Original, the drums had the bearings pressed into the drum itself, and the wheel studs are part of the drum.    Are you using a hub that uses rear drums to slip over a hub?

It's a factory set up.  The bearings are located in the hubs, and the actual drum is pressed onto the hub.  They are actually two separate pieces, not one.  If you do a search for front drums, you will see they do not include the hub assembly.

Guess it's been a few years since I've messed with mine.   I could have sworn the front drum was all one piece

Try putting the nuts on the hub and drum and then get them resurfaced as an assembly.

So what I ended up doing was to replace the wheel studs on the right side so the drum wasn't so loose and made sure I had the proper torque on the retaining nut on both sides.  That fixed the problem! :woohoo:
