Title: No brake lights 70 cuda
Post by: Bpret on June 14, 2017, 05:34:36 PM
Need some help. I have a 70 cuda 340 3spd convertible with no brake lights. I traced it to a bad turn signal switch. I had no idea the brake lights went through the turn signal switch. My question is can the original be repaired or just replace it. If replacement, anyone have a good source and are they all the same (years) trying to get it right the first time.
Thanks Brian

Try Napa auto parts.
They seem to have everything that the other places don't.

You could get one through the Chrysler dealer a few years ago as well. Much better quality I think.

Thanks I'll try a dealer. Some of the aftermarket ones don't look right. The flasher knob is different

Looking on line most repos don't have a very accurate looking flasher knob. Has anyone purchased one that looks correct. If so who has them.

Nobody has the correct looking 1970 flasher knob. You can change the knob by drilling out rivets etc..., or modify the new knob to fit. :alan2cents:

Unless you know for certain, I would be surprised if you had an original turn signal switch.  It is not worth fixing, just get a new one.  Napa has them in stock usually.

To the best of my knowledge NAPA does not have one that fits a 1970 column without modifications.. If they do I certainly would like to know the part number :dunno:

It may just be the contacts inside the switch.....I've never had one apart, that's @Cuda Cody (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/cuda-cody_1) 's department.

With mods to the switch or column for mounting?

The black knob is too wide on the new switches. It needs to be filed down....I was filing out the columns until some smart assed kid told me his much easier way.  :pullinghair:

Standard TW7 is the part # same part Mopar sells for 8x the cost but the flasher button is bigger , you can trim the back of the button so it fits properly but it is not 100% right
The power to the brake light goes through the turn switch so the light can be interupted as it uses the same bulb

The shame of it is it looks great and it's an original. I'm looking into it but ordered a new one for now to get the car back on the road

I just got a reply from JS restorations. He can restore them. He needs to test it to see what's wrong that will determine the price

Ordered a replacement switch. It has a second harness on it that mine doesn't,three wire connector. Anyone know what it is for and can I just tape it out of the way? I will send out the original to be restored but want to get the car back on the road.

It's for C-Bodies or something and had to do with blinkers on the fenders or hood I think.  Just tape it out of the way and you'll be fine.   :bigthumb:

The extra three prong is a c body thing for the fender turn signals.

You can cut the connector off, tape it up and hide it in the column no prob.

I just cut the wire to the second plug off as close a s possible to the switch , they are for the turning lamps on C bodies which are a side light illuminated to help see around a corner , never used on a E body

I had the same problem on my 67 Dart.  It was a broken wire near the switch.  I soldered in a section of wire to lengthen it and it worked out fine.
