Title: Color of Primer used under 1970 FC7
Post by: JSmithTN on November 10, 2022, 01:25:04 PM
Can someone tell me what color Plymouth used under the FC7 paint?
Is there a link to photos and the story of the paint process that they used, I think that it would be interesting to read.
Thanks for any help
Jeff

This one's easy. The factory had a problem with the FC7 sticking. Back in 71 or so you would see quite a few FC7 cars with patches of paint peeled off revealing the grey primer underneath.

I haven`t dug into my road runner too far yet but I have noticed what looks to be reddish brown primer under the dash area, ST Louis built road runner.

This is a great read on how Superbirds were built at Lynch road. Need to scroll down to "Factory Painting a Plymouth Superbird"
In the article it lists the painting process which would be similar to what e-bodies got in their plant.

I`m reading my 1966-1970 B-Body restoration book and it references the Superbird process. There is also a section by Restorations by Rick that describes the underbody paint process and says the process is red oxide first (dip color?), then light gray, then top color overspray. The red oxide dip with gray primer sprayed then top coat is what I`m seeing on mine so far.

Red oxide interior, gray under purple exterior and trunk.

Interesting reading...wow...

its amazing how well the organization was for assembling all those different cars in one huge plant.   I graduated from college in 1969 and became a computer programmer.   Thus, i am fully aware of just how primitive the computers of that era were, and that they were able to use them to sequence all of that stuff with build sheets, production sheets, etc...

Wow..
