I have done dozens of pad paint restorations.
1.  Clean the groove very well---remove ALL the old paint. Lacquer thinner and q-tips, rags, etc
2.  Use the Silver of your choice
3.  Use the finest, smallest artists brush you can find and lay a coat of paint in the bottom of the groove being careful to apply paint only to the                bottom of the groove.  You WILL get some paint where you don't want paint but don't worry.
4.  Use a soft cloth dampened (not wet) with thinner and remove the extra paint.

Saves a lot of time masking and I don't know how you would effectively mask the sides of the groove
