Title: Throttle Cable mods?
Post by: tparker on September 08, 2023, 01:32:22 PM
Just curious if anyone has info on changing the length of the throttle cable? Not sure if I want to do this but just thinking things through.

Background: I swapped my 318 for a 340 back in 1990. I reused almost everything off the 318. Hey, I was 18. The car has been sitting for decades and I have "misplaced" several items including the kickdown bracket. I picked up several different types from some swap meets but apparently this whole setup is a mess and not easy to figure out what is correct on what is not. I put one bracket which almost works but the kickdown rod (single rod not the 3 sectional setup) is about a an inch or so too short to reach the tranny kickdown lever. I switched to a different bracket that seems to work but it moves everything rearward. I can fab up the slotted linkage that connects to the tranny easy enough, but the throttle cable distance is very short and forces the cable in to weird contortions, hence why I was thinking about getting a shorter one or getting a second one and shortening that one. I know, I should just get the correct parts. But that is both difficult and somewhat expensive and I have a bunch of other stuff I am trying to do to get the car running again.

Any comments or thoughts?

My throttle cable broke about a month ago I tried different things nothing really worked well, My cable is 21 1/2 inches went to auto parts stores and everybody had 23 inches long, I figured an inch and a half wouldn't make that much difference but it did still didn't work right. So I went on eBay and found a 21 and 3/4 long that one works, actually that was the second time I was on eBay first time all I could find was 23 inch, after shipping and taxes it was $81.61 from NW performance Auto parts, and it has medal on it just like my original, the other one I ordered first was plastic. I also seen brackets on line but I have a 4 speed so mine is probably difficult

I bought a Lokar throttle cable.  Far better than original. You won't regret buying one for yourself

I did the same swap on my 72 Challenger back in 84.
The 4 bbl manifold places the primaries forward of the center of the manifold.
The 318 was a 2bbl  was centered on the manifold. This makes the carb linkage and kickdown rod too short if you try to use the same.
Fix was very simple. I  cut the manifold bracket and moved it forward and rewelded it. I added a section to the kick down rod and welded that. Done.
Everything always worked correctly.

@MoparLeo (https://forum.e-bodies.org/mlist/moparleo_479) I think if I use the bracket I have and weld a piece into the kick down linkage that would work. Not sure I trust my welding skills, but what the heck, I'll give it a try. I think I like that better than moving everything rearward and having to deal with a shorter cable, if that even exist. Thanks

Just measure the difference and cut it and mark it.
. Take it to the local muffler shop and they can weld it in 5 minutes.

A helpful chart for throttle cable lengths and Pioneer brand part numbers.
