Title: New Forum Design
Post by: Cuda Cody on November 26, 2023, 07:43:13 AM
Want to thank @TwitchisMental for designing us a new theme and all the assistance to get our forum back.  He has been a tremendous part of getting the look and feel back after the big crash.  :worship:  :bravo:

Everyone please take a look around and get a feel for the new theme.  Let us know if you find any big issues.  Somethings we might be able to fix and somethings we had to live without.  But overall we now have a super fast forum and no more "slow site" issues. We will be adding some new features as we go too!

Thank you to everyone that stuck with me during this process and a HUGE thanks to @MoparDave for sponsoring this forum which allowed us to make the jump to our very own dedicated server.   PLEASE consider buying your Mopar parts from https://www.rosevillemoparts.com/  or call Dave direct at 586-859-2575 or Dradcliffe@mikeriehls.com.  If we support him he can support us!  :grouphug:

We can't thank you enough, @TwitchisMental, for bringing your expertise to the Forum when we needed it!!

Also, thank you to our amazing Members who tolerated a slow response time and patiently waited for the site to return. Without you, there would be no community, no Forum. You are the BEST!! :bradsthumb:

Would like to add that if anyone likes the stock theme you can change your own theme view in your profile under "Look and Layout". Click on your user name to get to that area.  And you also have the option to go with a "dark" version of the new theme to!  :lookatthat:

Might as well get rid of the "GALLERY" tab on the Home page since "An error has occurred
Sorry, this section isn't available at this time."

And yes, I promote Roseville Moparts on other forums as well. When anyone's looking for a part I add a Roseville link of that part in the thread.

Quick question which may have been asked and answered - is there a way to set the thread to show the most recent post rather than the first post which could be years old?

Yes that is actually a built in feature of SMF that you can enable. Profile/UCP > Look and Layout > and check "Show most recent posts at the top in topic view" . :)

1) Am I the only one that sees my "Envelope" in all the threads?
2) After clicking on my "Nickname" am I the only one that sees my email hyperlink?

I always used the "NEW" button that is by the thread title. It brings you to the first post in the thread that you haven't seen yet.

Does the Mopar 'E' no longer show Topics that have new threads or are read? The previous one had bold E's for topics with new posts, and 'faded' ones that do not...

Or is it just my imagination?

Also, not trying to be fussy or anything, but is there a way to turn off the confirmation asking if you are sure you want to mark topics or posts as 'read'? Mine always has that second step required to mark a topic or post as read, even if just having read it, or if I am just not interested in that particular post, and want to mark it as read?

@Jay Bee No, that just filters all the posts if read or not...

I am talking about the big E at the start of each topic... It used to be bold if there were new posts in that section, then faded when all read...

If you mean within the message index(topic view), then no you are not crazy.

With SMF 2.1 there are many possible icon options for a post. Anything from a paperclip indicating that it has attachments to user select-able options like a winky face.

Trying to change this overall behavior would be a pain to say the least.. it would also take the customization possibilities out of it.

Mine always has that second step required to mark a topic or post as read, even if just having read it, or if I am just not interested in that particular post, and want to mark it as read?

This is another intentional behavior by the SMF 2.1 software. I can understand the confirmation being annoying, but it is basically to help prevent marking things as read on accident.(Amongst other things)  Infact this was such a common requested feature back in 2.0, a mod was made for it haha.

So it was included with 2.1 by default.

Ahh if you mean the checkboxes, that is from the recent posts mod that is installed. It is basically to filter where you get the recent posts from.

Unfortunately the mod doesn't really have any options to remove those entirely.

Title: Re: New Forum Design
Post by: 73_Cuda_4_Me on November 30, 2023, 06:15:47 AM
Originally, the 'E' next to section topics was bold if unread posts were in topic, and would dim when all posts were read and you went back to  main board listing. That no longer works, and the Engine section on mine is always dim, even with new posts in that topic. Here is the comparison showing the difference I see.

I can key in on topics I am most interested in that have new posts much more quickly by using the bold vs dim method, and I believe the theme is supposed to do that, but isn't, per 'New' screen shot shown below? :notsure:

Okay. I see what he's talking about.  The really light yellow behind them is hard to see.  This is what we had before.  Dark blue with a yellow glow if it was unread and a light non lit blue for read.
Title: Re: New Forum Design
Post by: Cuda Cody on November 30, 2023, 08:01:51 AM
Since we only have 1 sub board, we would either need to take it out so we don't have sub boards or come up with a 3rd logo or color to show a sub board new topic.
Title: Re: New Forum Design
Post by: TwitchisMental on November 30, 2023, 08:44:38 AM
I see the issue. Basically 2.0 only had on off and redirect. 2.1 has on on2 off and redirect.  The on2 is a more translucent version of the on.

I will get that resolved.

Edit: Give it a hard refresh(control + f5) and you should be good to go now.

If the sub board highlights the main board one, that suffices for me. That is the way the old one worked.

The reset did the trick for me, and I can tell read and unread sections like used to be!

Kudos to both of you! Thanks for all you do for all of us!

Any chance of getting the "Similar Topics" feature back? If it's too much hassle to re-introduce that, then don't bother. I'm guessing only a small percentage of members/guests referenced it - but I could be wrong.

I can't remember where exactly it was at the bottom, either below the last post in a thread OR below the Quick Reply box.

Any way to see it on a phone? That's all I use
Maybe if you're really good....I'll do it for you on Christmas lol... I kid I kid.

Let me play with the CSS and I will see what I can do.

Edit: This should now be resolved.

Kudos and thanks to everyone who works so hard to build this site and make it better every day!  Much appreciated - much faster.

I went to the Resources tab > restoration videos to review Cody's videos on stainless restoration.
Every time I click on a video, I receive: "Not Found - Error 404"
This occurs with Chrome, Firefox, and Brave browsers.  I am signed in as a member.
P.S. I did locate and re-watch the videos on YouTube.
Thanks again.

The link in your url bar seems off. Videos can be found here - https://www.e-bodies.org/videos/

With that said some resources are infact not loading and we are trying to get the source of the issue. There seems to be something wrong with the plugin and have contacted the plugin maker about it.

Cody,
Is it possible to add a feature to allow hovering over a post's title/subject and have a preview pop-up showing the first paragraph of the post?
A preview is helpful if the title/subject is something ambiguous like "Need Help".

RE: this. IMO, it's click bait so I've personally adopted a recent MO.
If the OP can't be bothered to get specific in the subject line, then I can't be bothered to open that thread.

Not seeing this myself. If I were to guess this would be a browser setting issue.

Which browser are you using? Any addons?  Have you tried to replicate the issue in another browser?

Currently shows a preview of the last post, rather than the first post of a thread. Anybody else seeing the same when hovering?

This works for me on my PC desktop. I've noticed you need to click on the reply tab , the one in dark blue near the bottom.( not just the window tab that automatically open)  Then type text if you want . Then notice the " click or drag files here to attach them" in heavy black font at the bottom of the reply window. When you do that a window to your files/pictures opens, then you click and drag on the desired picture and drag it over the " click or drag files here to attach them" heavy font, when you do that a dotted outline appears and you simply drag it in the dotted box and let go and it loads.
Works for me, sorry I'm not a big computer whiz, hope that helps?

I am very glad that the new photo attachments will allow more than one photo at a time to be attached.
The old way, opening one attachment window per picture was very time consuming.
This makes loading pictures much easier and will result in more pictures being posted in general.

Thanks yal!!

Ok, I have one beef. Same as I had on the last forum set up.

On all the other forums, when I click on a thread that I have read already it takes me to where I left off or where the new post is.
This forum I have to hit the "new" tab.  I tend to forget about the "new" tab and have to reverse out of the thread to hit the new tab instead of scrolling to find the new post.
I know, it's just a few extra clicks but the convenience of the site remembering where I was and taking me there is quite nice.
I don't suppose there is anyway to achieve that is there.

I really like that now when you hover over a posting , that you get a look at the actual text similar to what other sites do.
This is great as it is very easy to skim quickly over all the posts to see what is inside with out actually going to the post totally. Also I noticed now that posting pictures is as simple as going to the bottom and clicking on the " add files " at the bottom. This did not do this before and is a very good improvement. Thanks.

Most browsers have a built in spell check feature. Which browser are you using?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another note, some of the requested features or behaviors are actually enabled by using going into profile > look and layout. I do suggest checking those features ;).  One option under POSTING is "Return to topics after posting by default" which I believe will solve some of the reported "issues".

If you are going to a thread by clicking one of the recent posts at the top and then clicking back... that is the correct behavior.
