Title: Missing Rosette rivet
Post by: SeventyTX9RTRag on January 02, 2024, 06:44:15 PM
While looking at a car I noticed that one of the rosette rivets was missing on the VIN tag. Car has what looks like is the original dash. The VIN tag looks good, but with a missing rivet, most likely the VIN tag has been off the car which means the dash has probably been replaced or removed from the car? Or do these rivets come out after time?

Thanks

I've not seen them come off without someone trying to remove them.  The good news is they are reproduced.

To install the rivet does the dash have to come out of the car?

It's most likely the dash would need to be out.  It does take a little time and a helping hand to get the dash out, but it's not nearly as hard as one would think.  You can always try with the dash in first and see if it can be done.

Nah, leave the dash in the car and pull the windshield... :))

Not 100 percent correct, but perhaps disassemble the replacement rivet and fix the rivet head in-place with some adhesive?

The dash isn't that hard to remove. The only tricky part was a couple bolts that are near the windshield that are a little hard to get it out if I recall correctly. I am not 100% sure, but I think you might not have to remove the dash completely. You might be able to loosen all the bolts and move the dash just enough to to get a pop rivet gun up there. There Are two bolts on the lower part of the dash that might allow enough room to swivel the dash rearward. But maybe not.

:iagree:   That's a great idea @tparker .  With the small bolts near the top defrost that are close to the windshield removed and 2 larger side bolts loosened up the dash might just rotate down enough to give you great access to do the fix without having to take the whole dash out!

:iagree: I replaced my dash cap without removing the dash or windshield. Not "fun/easy" but can be done
