Title: Fenders On or Off for Reinstalling Hinges and Doors???
Post by: DeathProofCuda on March 30, 2024, 01:12:22 PM
Getting ready to reinstall my driver side door after rebuilding the hinges.

Is it necessary or recommended to remove the fender to facilitate access to the hinge adjustment bolts or am I better off leaving the fender in place as a reference for getting the door back in place?

It's been awhile since I removed the door and sort of remember it being a b!tch to access the hinge bolts.  IIRC, I unbolted the doors from the hinges and then unbolted the hinges from the body once I had better access to those bolts.  That has me thinking that I might be better off removing the fender for the door reinstall.  What's your method?

Thanks

Well...imo...and you know what they say about those...if you are already painted, remove the fender. I was adjusting my doors a couple years ago and managed to take some paint off the fender.

I don't have any worries about potential damage to my current black primer alligator skin finish.  Just looking for the easiest way to get a properly adjusted door.

In for the answers on this as well. Have replacement hinges waiting.
Original paint so I would prefer not to remove fenders.

Despite my curiosity to pull the fenders, I need to avoid the potential for more scope creep and get this thing back on the road soon, so am planning to give this a go without removing the fenders.

With the dash out and splash shield removed from the rear of the fenderwell, looks like I should be able to access everything pretty easily.  :wrenching:

The factory replaced the doors last after the interior was installed. It will need to be done by 2 people as you won't have the same jig as the assembly line did.
The factory service manual tells you to use a floor jack with a piece of carpet on top.
I would also use masking tape in all potential contact areas and take your time.
I also should have mentiond that the hinges should be mounted to the body first. Then mount the doors to the hinges.
Much easier and the hinges should be installed on the body before they are painted as well.
No paint on the mounting surfaces of the hinges except for primer.
I will attach some info for you.
