Title: Elastomeric Bumper
Post by: Romero14 on January 03, 2025, 08:00:53 AM
Has anyone tried repairing a rubber bumper? I know a guy that has one with an end torn off.

I'm sure it can be done, but the reproductions are suppose to be pretty nice so it might come down to a time vs cost thing.

there are some body guys experienced in elastomerics.  there was a shop in the los angeles area that could repair and restore them, i took front bumper to them back in the late 1980s.  the bumper was bent and had a chunk missing from it.  it cost me $200 back then, which seemed like alot, but the bumper looked brand new.

but just as cuda cody says, we have reproduction ones now that are lower in cost than OEM.

Thank you guys. I'm guessing buying a reproduction one would be cheaper than getting one repaired.

It's a specialized talent that is not in much demand, these days.

I'm not needing it in a month or two so I'd have the time.

If you do buy a reproduction, @Chryco  has them.

I believe the bumpers are the old Gene design.
Someone help me out, Gene ?who?  Didn't Chryco buy the molds from him?

If you are not in a rush I would indeed try to fix the original.  I see originals at carlisle every year for 800 to 1200 that always need something done to them.

Please fill us in if you find someone who does the elastomeric repairs.

I'll keep you guys posted. I was thinking maybe we could do the repair ourself if we couldn't find someone else to do it.

No firsthand experience with redoing one but attached is a good article from the Pontiac GTO forums -
