Title: AGM Battery Question
Post by: Daveh on October 30, 2017, 01:33:33 PM
Hey Guys,

I'm looking to put a battery in my trunk and rather than put a whole box in there and vent it I was thinking of an AGM battery with a tray like below.  There seems to be a lot of AGM batteries popping up more and more besides the Optima in the market.

My questions is with any AGM battery does it need to be vented? The Optima doesn't but I wasn't sure with the others. My guess would be it doesn't since it's jell.  I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes it does. AGM's don't vent under normal conditions, but do when overcharged. The electrical system of e-bodies are prone to overcharging - has to do with high resistance connections 'fooling' the VR into overcharging the battery.

That is correct. AGM's don't normally vent. Only on over charging.

They will swell up in size if really over charged. I saw an SLA shaped like a football once.

It's an Absorbant Glass Mat soaked in acid.
Also called Sealed Lead Acid. SLA

Gel batteries are not seen anymore except some special applications.
The first electric cars had them. Like Chrysler did. The one that looked like a giant Golf cart.

Gel batteries have a different charging algorythm than AGM's.
It must have it's own special charger for it.
Do not mix battery chargers with different types of the 3 kinds of batteries.

Thanks Topcat I appreciate the information.  Boy are they expensive though.  It's going in the trunk of my 71 Challenger and I live in South Florida.  Do you see any issues with the heat and the batteries?

Heat, charge, discharge and load are the co efficients that destroy batteries.
Load is headlights, wipers, heaters, stereos, etc.

Even though you're in Florida, I wouldn't worry. It's not like you drive it  everyday. Right?

I use my Northstar for the winter months while the reproduction Mopar Battery takes a winter break.
Come Spring time, I switch it for the car show season.

I would get wrid of the OE VR and get a more reliable  single wire internally regulated alternator. The chances of over charging  will be next to none.
