Thanks Dan for looking
here's a column shift column & shaft - it measures ~41.25" about 1/2" longer than the parts catalog listing of 40.73" (measurment just to the cross pin??)
& is this identifiable '70 VS '71 - what would the difference in the shaft be? 1970 # 2996760 VS. 1971 # 3575544 (same length per the catalog)
FWIW the catalog shows e-body manual steering shaft 1970 (43.86" lg.)

Dan, that's what I like to know also. The measurement of Shaft should be 40.73 but should it be measured end to end or top end to the center of pin? This will make a difference, I always did it end to end,not 100% sure if that was correct way.

OK Dan, more info. I have a 71 E-body column untouched. I took it apart and found the shaft to be 40.250 from end to end. So it is a little short but may be collapsed 1/2 inch not sure but it sure look's OK. Can you measure just the bottom section, mine is 24-1/4 from end to end of lower section.
