I'll be adding a new AMD rear valance and R/T dual exhaust tips. What is the "correct" amount they should stick out? Is there a engineering drawing or something showing this? :notsure:
Didn't see anything in the parts catalog, but here's what it did have....
I generally do about an inch or so....They look pretty goofy when out too far and not cool enough if in too far....
You'll figure out the perfect length you want....Your car doesn't exactly "follow the rules" :takealook:
There's RULES? :unbelievable:
My original Cuda tips stick out about 3/4 inch. It looks right.
I set mine to what looks right/good to me. My Challenger tips definitely stick out further than my Cuda tips. Of the few survivor cars I've seen, I can't say there was a factory preset. :alan2cents:

I don't think there was a "factory" spec. The factory tips fit INSIDE the muffler. The tips will only go in so far before they stop. I'm sure that's what they did at the factory. They didn't have time to measure each side. Just shoved them in there until they stopped and if they still had time, tighten the clamp.(if not, someone else will fix it)
They definitely look goofy if they stick out a lot. I think 3/4"- 1" is about right. IMO Do what you think looks best. My tips were a little too close to the valance so I added a spacer between the trunk floor and the hanger. Slightly lowering the tip makes it look like it's sticking out farther.
Another set of tips to compare.

:iagree:
I think this is spot on, any less and it seems to tucked in and too far out looks like it's out of place.
Another vote for 1".

That's NOT what she said.
Ive always set them about 1" out or so. Too far looks goofy and too little leaves the valance black.

That's what I'm trying to avoid " valance black" :bigthumb:
It's mostly just personal preference. Having spoke with some guys over the years and seeing some survivor cars they almost never made the tips the same length from side to side. Most guys are going about 3/4" past the bottom role. That's about where i prefer mine but no right or wrong. The black valance usually isn't an issue unless you are running rich. The baffle in the tip and the rectangular design tend to dissipate the exhaust gasses well.
Sorry for the late reply. Was on family vacation for 11 days and checked out of the world.

If there was one more pipe on each side, you might think the guy had an exhaust pipe for each cylinder. :looney: :crazytalk:
When I cut them off the car George Barris wanted them back...

No, I sold my /6 convertible to help pay for the cool tips.....
Eight months ago, I purchased a 73 Challenger. Never paid much attention to the exhaust tips sicking out 2-3/4" from the body. see pic. My neighbor who has a 70 Challenger this morning coincidentally asked if his quad exhaust tips should stick out more because the tips are flush with the valence panel. Then, I read this thread an hour later. My thoughts are whatever you prefer. I am going to move them in an inch now that it has been brought to my attention.
My experience is that if they are flush they look good but your valance will get pretty filthy quick, if they are out slightly they tend to not get the valance as dirty as fast and don't look bad. If they are too far out IMO they don't look as good but as you have stated, I believe its all personal preference.
X pipe is proven HP over H pipe...period!!

Absolutely correct. But I still prefer the sound of the "H" pipe. Just personal preference. :waving:
I know this is an old post, but I have a related question about the gap between then top of the exhaust tip and the bottom edge of the valence cut-out. What has worked for folks?
Should be an equal gap on all three sides in my opinion :alan2cents:
My exhaust was a little too tight and while back up, the exhaust would flex enough that the tips would rattle on the valance. I added some spacers between the trunk floor and rear hanger to gain a little more clearance.
I try to get them equal all around, I've never had a problem with them rubbing.

:iagree: I install mine protruding about 1" and you can use your index finger to check clearance on the three sides.
