How would a tunnel ram on a 512 perform on the street? Are they only good at high rpm or will they behave around 40mph and highway speeds? Would love to have the look of the tunnel ram but not sure I want to give up the streetability of my Holley street dominator.
What is this worth?

Big issue with that one is its for a single four barrel... Those really don't run well... Get one with two four barrels, run 500 CFM carbs, crank in plenty of timing & have fun... With 500+ inch it'll be lots of fun from 2000 RPM's & up...
I agree, a single 4 T R is a no go. If you found a 2x4 version they are very streetable on a stock inch 440 and would do well on a stroker. My friend ran dual 4779 750's on his and it worked great on a hydraulic flat tappet 440 in a Cuda.
We took off the T R and used a single 750 on a Torker 2 and it was like pulling 3 plug wires off.
Ok thanks for the feedback 👍
I've seen articles where a dual quad tunnel ram can be very streetable, and
give you about a 20hp jump throughout the power band. Looks cool, but
don't know that all the money spent is worth 20hp.

Yea I agree - going to keep my eye out for something local and priced well but otherwise not going to waste my money. My current intake and carb only has 300 miles on it but I see the look and I love it. Kind of also remind me of a poor man's blower setup. If I'm going to cut a hole in my hood, should probably be for a blower right?? haha
Get a spare flat hood & paint it... I use to hate seeing performance hoods cut.. And I saw it allot...
If you like the trade off of having something stick out of your hood for about 20hp then go for it!
I have tuned & played with almost every intake available & I agree with Runcharger , they are better than you would expect even on the street !

I agree, was gonna go tunnel ram on my Cuda, then decided to compromise with a dual quad Hillborn scoop attached to the
fiberglass hood, that rams cold air right on top of the K&N lid. So, I get the tunnel ram look a little, but cold air into the carb.
This thread reminded me of something I hadn't thought about since the mid-70's. (damn i feel old) Friend(Bobby) had a 1970 Chevelle SS with a 454. In the early to late 70's there was a cruise route in town. It was about 4 miles one direction. Right in the middle of it was the University main building and there was a parking lot in front of it that everyone parked in to watch the people cruising by. Bobby had put a tunnel ram on his car with 2 four barrels without knowing anything about setting them up. He would come by with this dual quad sitting up in the air(no air cleaner) and everyone would yell GET ON IT !!. Of course he would. When he tromped it, it just layed down like it died. Then after about 2 seconds fire would shoot up out the carbs and a slit second later the tires would lite up. All of us would laugh our asses off !! From that point on for a long time, he was known as "Bobby Two Fours". It was truly a site to see. :D
Thank you for bringing back an old fond memory.

Hmm that's interesting. I'm really only after the tunnel ram for it's looks, I want something old school and over the top aggressive.
I do have my stock flat hood sitting around - had a thread talking about that a few weeks ago also. Maybe I'll just stick with modifying that with a scoop(hemi or t/a) or cowl section or something. I can flip between that and my normal r/t hood without messing with the engine at all...
and the temporary hood painted black will look even more bad*ss
for a couple of years, just for jollies, I ran with a fake parachute
on the back of my car. Freaked a lot of people out!
And in 4th grade, I got 26 playing cards attached to my bike
with clothes pins!
Could a shaker hood be used with a tunnel ram without modification ?

26?! :unbelievable: That's just crazy talk!! :crazytalk: How did you find that many points to clip the cards to?? :notsure:
No so sure , I know there was one real shaker car running around with a tunnel ram through the hole , not sure how the hood opened though

What tunnel ram part # am I looking for? I've seen 1987 and 5987. Looks like 1987 is newer and still being sold while 5987 is older and no longer made? Is one better than the other?

Weiand ?
Yea Weiand
A few years back Hot Rod did a big block Mopar intake comparison. Tunnel ram tromped everyone in highest torque output, highest HP output, and under the curve torque production. Overall, it was impressive and changed my mind about tunnel rams being a high rpm only intake.
Yes, not sure about other applications but that 47 year old technology works on a BBM. I always wanted to try one on a Hemi but didn't know if I could live with the look or not.
