Title: Colour Change Decision - Gone Wrong ?
Post by: anlauto on February 24, 2018, 05:53:23 PM
Often times we debate what affects resale value or resale demand more then a colour change. Does painting a green car purple help it's value or hurt it's value compared to it's resale potential for possible buyers....

Here's an example of a colour change gone wrong.... in my opinion at least..... I don't think the current owner/seller is responsible for the colour change, but if he was.....I would certainly ask....What the heck were you thinking ? :looney:

I was asked today to post this T/A Challenger for sale on my web site .....something I offer to anybody with a cool car to sell....

It wasn't until later I read the fender tag, and I discovered what a cool car is hiding under these white robes.  :o

I do like white Challengers, but the colour change will definitely hurt the value of this car.

Wow, light blue metallic gator grain car!
I've seen another one I thought was one of one until I saw this one.  It's been through the Mecum auctions a few times recently, and sadly it was restored from a rot box and the quality was ok but not great.
It would be cool to restore this car back, but at the asking price it would cost way more than the car's value to do so.

No joking, that is one super cool color.  Why would you change to white from that color?  :crying:

I have to agree with the others, that is a cool color and I would never thought  of changing from that to white. I would think on a high demand car as a TA, AAR, V code or Hemi, or similar the original color would be an asset, even if one of lessor demand. On most any other car on a restoration, the change would not deter me from a purchasing.  :alan2cents:

Not to mention blue interior as well....So you have light blue FOUR SPEED, blue interior and a gator grain top :drooling:...I wonder how long this has been hiding it's true colours :('

I wonder when it was done? Where I live I don't think $20k to repaint properly is unreasonable. Pretty sure $10k won't get it painted if the painter starts with a bare shell.

That's the one that's been through Mecum at least 3 times.  I was interested in it when it went through Mecum Chicago in 2008.  I dropped out of the bidding early as it had a lot of rust repair, Palco interior panels etc.  Great 10 footer, maybe 5 footer even!

The current owner told me it was likely painted white in the 80's by a person who is no longer with us.  :andyangel:

Yup: This stuff wan't as important in the disco years. I don't think there is a bad factory colour for a T/A. They look good in any colour.

I was thinking last night.....I understand a colour change and getting rid of the vinyl top, but white is a strange choice over the typical red yellow orange purple type cars.....In the 80's we only wanted to paint cars white to hide the bondo  :o

Unless you were a fan of Vanishing Point...   Not easy to see but the frame said something about VP...

I like the white, if it was original. I think T/A's look awesome in white but this colour change was a bad idea.

Had it been any other model of challenger (slant 6, colum car with hubcaps) I would have been okay with it.

My very first thought.  I wonder if there is a lot of crappy body work hiding under all that white.

Back then the colour change might have helped it's resale value. Just because it was fresh paint. At least in the early 80's, few people gave a crap about originality
of the muscle cars and thought a six pak meant someone was bringing beers.
