Title: Finally.....A place to put my beverage!!!
Post by: Mickm on May 08, 2018, 09:18:37 PM
Hello All,
If the original project planning team dropped the ball on any one area, it was where do you put your "adult beverage" while you cruising around in your cool ride!!!
I have researched until I am blue in the face with no real satisfactory solution. I've seen add on's, strap'on's and all sorts of things I won't mention. :D :Dl

I realize the "original car owners" will not be interested in my solution and I fully understand and agree with their sentiments.  However, the TINFISH is not a number matching car and  was built srickly for enjoyment and cruzing.  The drink holder topic was one I could not get away from cause holding my drink in my lap... just didn't cut it for me.
So if you're interested, follow along and I'll show you what I did and how.  If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them.
Let's get started!!!
(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2Fs-l1600_zps6rff5wji.jpg&hash=801371d15bd3c51a3cb5e10e0bcc5ed6693f32f1) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/s-l1600_zps6rff5wji.jpg.html)
First issue to address was what to use???? I looked and looked but this one won out. It holds everything from a can drink to a big gulp. It has a black ABS body with an aluminum trim ring that matches my console facade that is covered in a black leather covering. Cost....$4.00 from ebay
with free shipping! It has a 3/8"drain spout. I opted to install a 3/8" plastic line over the nipple and drilled a hole in the hump for the hose to exit.
No water in the cut holder....yeah!!!
(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2F20180508_184939_zps7mmtbvha.jpg&hash=15982181372a682b1c0d88ddfaf69b6ead3ea639) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/20180508_184939_zps7mmtbvha.jpg.html)
This area screamed " put your drink holder here" to me.  The only place that made sense.

(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2F20180508_175542_zpsikorvfcv.jpg&hash=22c4bc435d0d9749aa342935315a459abc0e04e3) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/20180508_175542_zpsikorvfcv.jpg.html)
I removed the console from the car. I removed the top plate and placed the 3 5/8" hole saw as far back as necessary for the cup holder to sit. I scribbled around the hole saw.

(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2F20180508_184014_zpsykfopin7.jpg&hash=17334d3ea556f22ff364c3f6dc7d8279d7c5220a) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/20180508_184014_zpsykfopin7.jpg.html)
I opted to remove the necessary material using a soldering iron with a cut off blade. then cleaned up the area with a hole sander on a drill. Worked great!

(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2F20180508_191452_zps0isxbbzm.jpg&hash=f84dbc9d1285d00267e0965654f5e4c6f84f5034) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/20180508_191452_zps0isxbbzm.jpg.html)
You will need to remove some material from the shifter slide plate. Be sure not to take too much material away. You want everything to look as  it should thu all gear shifting.

(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2F20180508_190228_zps1jrpquqc.jpg&hash=01ce08514a55431ab4393812618cd4326bd6153f) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/20180508_190228_zps1jrpquqc.jpg.html)
Mount the top plate to the console then, transfer the center to the top plate so you are drilling correctly.
Then I removed the necessary material using  the hole saw with the top plate clamped in the drill press.

(https://forum.e-bodies.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1104.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh332%2FMickm33%2FCuda%2FCuda%2520Cup%2520Holder%2F20180508_191924_zpsz7dlsqib.jpg&hash=eefe157017fd805feecc5db64f74ae2e982a2378) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/Mickm33/media/Cuda/Cuda%20Cup%20Holder/20180508_191924_zpsz7dlsqib.jpg.html)
And this is the finish result!  To me it looks like this is how it should have come from the factory..but didnt'

I couldn't be happier with the result. So much so, I took the TINFISH out for a neighborhood cruise,  after I was finished to see how it felt.
It is perfect!!!

Cheers!
Mickm

Any chance you could put a large Mcdonalds cup in there and put the shifter into first so that I can see how close it is to the cup?
I have some worries there when down shifting to first.

Looks awesome though!  Great solution.

GoodysGotaCuda, you are correct! The project planning team is where the blame should fall, a brain fart there. Original post edited to be correct. No bad words about engineers from me, especially since I am a retired engineer. lol

Nice Job!
I would like to attempt this. Do you have a pointer to the cup you bought?

I might me missing something, But if you know where to put the hole, could you not leave the console intact and just use the hole cutter and drill down from the top?

May need to copy your mod.

Looks perfect!  The nice thing about this mod is that it's completely reversible in just a few minutes.  You could buy a second top plate and replace it if you were entering the "stock" class at a car show.

I bought similar drink holders for my car.(A-body)  My plan is to conceal them under the console lid.   :bigthumb:

Burdar, excellent point!!!

CUDA HEAD, Here is a link to the same cup but for $5.95 with free shipping.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Plastic-Cup-Holder-w-Stainless-Steel-Trim-for-Marine-Boat-RV-Camper-FREESHIPP/291712731994?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D51377%26meid%3D12fc81b2167348b7b7f97f8a9075cc79%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D291712731994%26itm%3D291712731994&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A231332cc-53ca-11e8-90e1-74dbd18093f1%7Cparentrq%3A46a8556a1630ac1e7d4b0950fffbafd3%7Ciid%3A1

"I might me missing something, But if you know where to put the hole, could you not leave the console intact and just use the hole cutter and drill down from the top?"

Not really, you need to remove some material from the side support and from the outside of the lower portion of the console that is not seen cause it's under the seat. If you will look back at photo's 3 & 4 you can see exactly what material has to be removed from the top view.

If you get serious about doing this, I can pull my console out and take pictures of everything that has to be cut from different angles.

It's not a hard job, you just need to go slowly so as not to make a mistake. Total time to do this was under an hour.

Cheers!

Thanks for the pointer and the advise.

When I searched EBay for it, that is the one I found also. I just noticed it was not the same price and had a Stainless Steel ring.

I agree that we can find new top covers, but I did not know about the other material that had to be removed. Good thing I have a spare sitting on the shelf.

Thanks Again

I glossed over this part on my initial read:

"It has a 3/8"drain spout. I opted to install a 3/8" plastic line over the nipple and drilled a hole in the hump for the hose to exit."

So you actually drilled a hole in the floor pan for a drain?

DAYLEY/CHALLENGER, I am almost sure that is the seller whom I got mine from. Shipping was free"to Louisiana" and arrived two days ahead of schedule.

Katfish, I drilled a hole just to the left side of the transmission tunnel. I installed a rubber grommet with a 3/8" inlet then slipped the drain hose thru.

Cheers!

I have to wonder how many read this thread and ordered the cup.
