Title: Dana 60 from A 71 power wagon 3/4 ton qestion
Post by: JS29 on July 24, 2018, 01:30:03 PM
I have heard that this rear-end could be fitted to A car. how true and how difficult would it be?    I have one along with the front differential, didn't want to break up the set but I might.

Well you can: When I look for a core to narrow for a car I look for the gear set I want and a power lock. If it has a power lock (Sure grip differential) then you can freshen the clutch plates in it and add 35 spline side gears. You still have to purchase 35 spline axles, brakes, axle housing ends etc. Then you have to find someone with the fixture to narrow it and weld the axle ends on true.

Generally the cost is similar to buying one new without the hassle but I agree with Sheldon get a dana with the ratio & powerlock if you are going to modify one

The last one I did: I bought a 66 half ton Ford Dana 60 with Power Lock for $100, Used factory Axles from a 68 Super Stock Dart for $250, new clutchs $200, new side gears $150, Bearing kit was around $200, I spent lots of labour cleaning up old 8 3/4 housing ends and used the brakes off the 8 3/4 as well. Labour was $200 for a guy with a jig to weld them on. So it cost me $1100 but that was about 10 years ago so it is pretty hard to beat the cost of a new S60 without finding some deals.
You also won't have a pinion snubber provision on the housing and the S60 is much easier to set carrier preload and backlash on.
