Title: 1971 Challenger correct front license plate bracket
Post by: GrandpaKevin on July 31, 2018, 08:23:42 PM
Trying to determine the correct front license plate bracket for a 1971 Challenger.

The front bracket on my June built 1971 Challenger bolts to holes in the front bumper.

The new repop front bumper I installed on the wife 's 1971 Challenger doesn't have the 2 holes to mount the bracket to.

I've seen pictures of a number of 1971 Challengers where the bracket bolts to the front valance and this makes the plate look recessed under/behind the bumper.

In searching 1971 Challenger front license plate brackets it shows both types.

Which one is correct?
Is it build date related?

I thought all 70-72 Challengers had the bracket mounted to the valance.  73 and 74 had the bracket mounted to the bumper reinforcement.

If you Google pictures for 1971 Challengers the majority have the valance mounted front brackets but there are a few that appear to have the bumper mounted bracket.

Here is a restored one from Barrett Jackson.

That's a late 71 because it has the slots in the bumper for the newer style jack.  Did 72's mount to the valance like I thought they did?  The bracket pictured isn't the 73-74 style.  The 73-74 style is triangular.

OK now I'm out walking around in the garage in my bare feet removing front license plates and taking pictures like a crazy old grandpa.

First picture is the 3 holes in the front bumper I took off the wife's Jan SPD Challenger, the bumper has the jack slots and more than likely is not original to the car.
I did notice there are 2 holes in the front valance where it appears a valance mounted license plate bracket might mount.

The second pic is the current front plate bracket that is bolted to the front bumper on my June SPD 1971 Challenger.
The part number on the bracket is 3595074 which is for a 1972 Challenger?

The bracket mounts to the bumper using the exact same outside 2 holes in the first picture I posted.
There are no holes in the front valance of this car to mount the plate bracket to.
I'm strongly thinking this is the way the front bracket came from the factory.

FWIW the bracket on the black 71 is the normal 70-71 bracket.... But it's installed wrong.....
