Title: Turn my 72 into a `70 AAR?
Post by: torredcuda on August 07, 2018, 05:43:42 PM
Just kinda thinking about it but not too seriously - should I turn my lowly `72 Barracuda into a `70 AAR clone?  One of my top dream Mopars would be a real AAR 4 spd car but with my budget unless I sell everything and find a major project cheap enough I`ll never own one. So since the fire mine is getting a re do anyway I buy and install a `70 grill, change out the tail panel and lights for a `70 style, add an AAR hood and stripes and done! Of course although I love my Tor-Red I`m not a huge fan of it with black - too Halloween looking so would have to change the color also, maybe B5, B7 or white with blue interior like the one I saw in a junkyard years ago?

What's wrong with Halloween looking cars ?

Nothing "wrong" with them ,just not my favorite color combo.

It's your car make it into a AAR,  then drive the wheels off of it.

If he "drives the wheels off of it".....it will just scrape on the ground :drunk:

I don't mind what-if cars either, like a 72 AAR. Painting an orange car another colour is wrong, ha ha.

I say go for it, I would definitely prefer the AAR.
Can't think of a reason not to.

Go for it. You need side markers too, but seeing as its re-paint time anyway, no better time than now!

Personally I'd be happy with an AAR hood and everything else '72.

Your car , do what makes you happy
AArs are just wicked looking cars so why not

I once knew a guy that had a '72 Challenger T/A. All he did was hood, spoiler, stripes and that 340 six pak fender decal. It did look pretty cool. Whatever you decide just make sure you don't have any regrets. You know, that shoulda, woulda coulda stuff.

. . . maybe B5, B7 or white with blue interior like the one I saw in a junkyard years ago?
Like others have mentioned, your car, do as you want. I've always thought doing a Resto mod with an AAR theme would be cool, but would never do it to a real AAR. Maybe a non-factory color option that I think would look great, silver and black. And if a Resto mod you can do as you wish with engine and suspension. Since I like the stock interiors I'd keep that look, but to each his own.

To bad you're so far away, I have an AAR hood I need to sell but shipping across country wouldn't make it worth wild. It's not an original but a very good reproduction done by Dales Cuda shop years ago.

Good luck whatever you decide!!

:iagree: Your car so do what you want.  However, be prepared for the "is it real", "why did you do that to a great car", "I don't like clones".  Personally, I don't care what anyone else thinks because its my car and I built it the way I want it not them.

I agree insofar as do what you want with it, it's your car, but it's a 72 so the bumpers aren't pushed out like the 73-74 cars, and it's a good color. If it were mine I would do things like swap in a 4 or 5 speed (if it's an auto), maybe add the V21 treatment, etc. but otherwise leave it alone.

Quotemaybe add the V21 treatment

I like this idea a lot.  You rarely ever see this hood treatment and stripe.  I also like the AAR idea.  Personally, I probably wouldn't worry about changing the grill and tail panel but you can if you want to.  I've seen other 72-74's made up in the AAR style and they looked really good.(with 72-74 grill and tail)

There are always the critics. If they don't like it....too bad how sad. The Cuda is yours not their's. Make it what you want. I have a 73 Challenger. Made it mine by installing a duck tail spoiler, pistol grip, T/A stripes, and got a nice T/A hood with pins from YearOne, Cragar five spoke wheels, with fat staggered meats. Next is tuck in the bumpers. Like the quad tail pipes out the back. Nothing permanent. Nothing has the script T/A except the BF Goodrich T/A tires.  LOL

At Mecum in Harrisburg last week there was a 70 Barracuda convertible turned into a 71 Hemi Cuda. Why he didn't keep it a 70 is beyond me. But there also was a 73 turned into a 71 Hemi Cuda convertible! ( he took a big loss on that) Both looked really nice. It's yours, I always say build what you like!

Not too concerned about what others will comment, the car is originally a 318, 904 but now a 340 4 spd rally gages, `cuda hood etc. but not a factory looking clone so I already get questions about what it is. If I go AAR look it will also not be a true factory looking clone and I`ll probably not even bother to change the side markers  but I do love the `70 grill and taillights more than the `72s. At this point it`s just daydreaming so not really sure which direction I want to go with the look, only that it will be different than it is now, maybe just an AAR stripe and hood, maybe the grill and taillights also, really don`t know yet???

The grille is pretty easy to do. Easy to just shave the markers off too, that might be a subtle change the finger pointers won't notice anyway.

If you do the AAR clone, I would shave the side markers. No use in going through the trouble to convert to 70 style side markers, just remove 'em altogether for a nice smooth look.

As others have said, it's YOUR car, build it how you want it. I have done things to my 'Cuda that will make others cringe and frankly, I don't give a F*** :D

AAR's are super sweet, gotta love the side-exit pipes and that strobe graphic, it's one of my all time favorite muscle cars.

A lot of work and money to do a true clone - side markers, seats etc. so if I do it will probably just be the stripe and hood and keep it a "custom" with the AAR look.

I'd at least do the black out on the tops of the fenders, doors & quarters....

After posting about the blackout I went looking for a picture & came across these.... Your fire was pretty minimal compared to this...  Ouch... I hope he had good insurance...  And even with this, it could have been so much worse....

What's different about the AAR seats compared to a Cuda?

72 seats are much different than 70 seats.

Sorry I thought the question was AAR vs standard seats, didn't consider the year.

My buddy Mopar Mitch here on the board's T/A Challenger that he rally races, is actually a '72 that he converted, back shortly after he got it in the '70s. Of course his is a street legal race version of the T/A, with minilites and Hoosier tires etc, instead of being a stock "T/A" except the VIN.
Everyone loves his car, I don't know that anyone ever criticizes it for not being born a T/A.
With all the repro parts available from sources like AMD, I bet customizing a 72 to a 70 is pretty straightforward these days.
