Title: 8 3/4 casting numbers
Post by: Burdar on September 30, 2018, 02:42:10 PM
I bought a 741 case center section yesterday. The casting numbers are 337. When was it cast?

Thinking about having this powder coated so it stays looking nice. Thoughts?

That was my first thought until I read an old Moparts post by "6bblgt" where he said 288 = Tuesday, 10/15 ('68) :notsure:

I was going by what my Dave Wise reference material says.  Could it be wrong? Sure it could....I don't understand the year code in that theory though.

Here's an interesting read on rears. Found this awhile ago.

It had 3.91's in it and a junk cone style sure grip so it's been apart before.

Here's a good article on the different cases and their bearing sizes.  This is why I'm not afraid to use the 741 in my application.  Dr Diff thinks it's highly underrated.

When disassembling the unit, I found that it has a 10 spline pinion.  The only replacement gears for the 741 have 29 spline pinions.  I'll have to find a replacement yoke.  Does anyone have a 29 spline yoke that takes the small 7260 U-joint sitting around?

I have a couple of them, and I think I'm only a Sunday afternoon drive away.

Thanks Gary.  I'm asking around to some local guys.  If I can't come up with anything I'll let you know.  :bigthumb:
