Title: Door mirror mounting hardware
Post by: Shoooter on January 15, 2019, 08:44:56 PM
For whatever reason my mou ring hardware for the mirrors was removed when the car was painted. It looks like a special tool is needed to crush the sleeve in place. Is there a special too for this? And secrets?

Called a rivnut. There's a rivnut tool to install it.

I don't normally recommend Harbor Freight but I picked this up from them since they are local and I didn't want to wait on shipping. It worked flawlessly and it came with lots of extra threaded sleeves for future needs.

:iagree:  I was going to suggest the same one. Good to have as you will find other uses for it too.

Here in Canada we always get the shaft, same part much different price!  :headbang:

That's a crazy difference in price. Would they charge you a lot of import fees if a member mailed you something? Seems you could save a bit by having one of us buy it local and ship it to you.

Nope just send it as a gift valued at $20.

Yea...send it UPS over the border so they can tack on a $65 brokerage fee  :haha:

No UPS is the worst way  to send anything to Canada. :stop:
I know you know Alan just mentioning it in case someone didn't know that. Post office is best if possible.

I didn't but I generally use post office simply because the price is usually better and they are just down the street.

I'll check that out. I have a rivit gun but dont think it has those sleeves. I already bought the inserts a whole ago so I'll try the first option if I cant get the proper gun

Those guns work great. I've tried them with the goofy little tool and it wasn't worth a darn.

I'd offer to mail mine to you to use, but by the time we mail it back and forth you might as well just buy one.

If you only need to do one sleeve, you can do it without the tool. There are a couple YouTube videos showing how. Easier to watch a two minute video than to explain. It's surprisingly easy. But I like using nice tools and for $20 bucks, it's worth having.

I had the same issue...bought the inserts from rosville. I could not get comfortable using the bolt method on the inserts, so Iwent and bought the tool...worked awesome!!!  Now I have a bunch of other ideas to use the inserts!!!

I just think using the right tool is the way to go!

Heading out tomorrow to buy the tool. Looks like it will come in handy

If your only going to use it once you don't need the tool you can make your own for the mirrors mounts

This is the idea FYI aluminum riv nuts will crush easier but may have a little less holding strength than steel. once you rig this up will work just fine
