steering ;wheel how far out

Ive got a floor mounted automatic transmission 74 Challenger.   So should the Key lock switch on steering wheel sit outside of the standard dash panel or simply below it ?   

Right now mine is below it but i wonder if i can pull the steering wheel out far enough for it to miss the bottom of the dash panel ?

Here is the pic.  You can see that the key release slide is under the instrument panel.  Is it safe to pull out the steering wheel far enough to clear it ? 

would need to pull out slightly more than one inch.   From the factory how far out is it ?

Mine sits under the dash.  However, I had to space the column down about .140" to keep it from hitting the instrument cluster and binding.

I doubt there is enough of a slot in the mounting bracket to pull it out a full inch.
