I am finally making progress on my swap, joined my A41 to my 6.1 and went to install the starter. The starter hits the block. Anyone else had this happen? It is a Chrysler mini starter.

Thanks!

The starter itself or the electric connector? I remember tossing a part of the electric connector as it hit. Can you post a picture?  Did you get the bushing seated OK in the bellhousing for the starter nose?

Chryco Psycho

Picture would help , but yes the electrical terminal on top can interfere but it is easily removed

I will try to grab a pic in a bit. It is not the electrical connector. It's the selinoid housing. I can't seat it super good as it is at a bit of an angle.

There are some starters available that can be clocked in different positions for clearance. On my 440, I had to remove the electrical terminal top and slightly grind the casing of the starter so it seated properly. I wrapped it in one of those heat shields since it was closer than I'd like and it's held up very well. Not sure if that will help you but maybe give you some ideas?

Initially I thought the spacer that came with the transmission was the issue and wasn't properly drilled to the right dimensions, but it is a clearance issue. Was difficult to take a pic that shows the problem.

Ah later model Hemi block. Isn't there a diesel starter that works for those?

Brad, I am glad you just posted that. The clocking is way different than mine. But quite pricey. I may need to look at another mini starter and see if there is a difference between what I have and others.

This is the best pic of the starter on my 6.4 I have, hope it helps.

I found this, maybe it will help you?
starter for an '05 Dodge Ram 2500 with Hemi and manual transmission

Read thru it, lots of good information. Hopefully I will be able to come to a conclusion in the next day or so.

It's the little things........

MoparDave

most likely you will have to grind the block and or the pan rail.

I ground off a bit of the 392 block, like @MoparDave... Not fun.

Looks like I will need to pound some clearance in my headers. One of the down pipes hits the solenoid housing.

May take a few beers to build up the courage to take a hammer and round whatever to my brand new ceramic coated headers.
