Good afternoon,

I've discovered this amazing site today and thought I would introduce myself and ask for some help at the same time.  I've had my 1970 Challenger since 1998.  I used her as a daily driver in Arizona for roughly four years before I decided she deserved a better life, fixed sheet metal, revived engine, etc.  I started to disassemble the car, then started a family and left her in my garage for over a decade untouched, and now I want to start working on her again.  The question I have is what do I really have?  The fender decoding tool on this website matches spot on to everything except for the R/T and SE badges.  I'm pretty sure the R/T is not accurate even though the badges all have very precisely drilled holes for mounting, but this is a 340 car.  However, is it possible that someone put an SE rear window and all of the appropriate SE badges on, or is this a true SE car?  I would love to know what everyone thinks based on there experience.  Thank you!

Welcome to the site from Panama
Your Chall looks great too !
Assuming you have the correct fender tag & the body stampings match on the rad wall & cowl you have a 70 340 Challenger  with the A66 code , the VIN would read JS if it was an R/T which is not possible in 70 with a 340 & the 23 would read 29 if it was a factory SE car so either the fender tag & vin were swapped to a SE body or someone went to a lot of trouble to swap the small window , trim & emblems onto your car . DO you have the overhead console on the roof inside as well , you pretty much have to so that the inner panels work with the small window ?
Yours was Built in the LA plant should have the Ralley dash & hood , dual exhaust with chrome tips , & was purple with a black roof & interior & stripes originally as well which I assume you have already figured out from the decoder.

Welcome @Twistedmetall   :welcome:  The A66 on your tag means you have a 340 that is basically a R?T but without the R/T in the VIN.  On a dodge you could not get a 340 R/T, but you could get everything that was on a R/T with the A66 package.  Might have been a sneaky way to buy a R/T without having to pay the high insurance rates.  :alan2cents:  Cool car!!!

Thank you everyone for your replies!

This is the confusing part about this car and what I never understood.  The black paint was done very poorly.  The original Plum Crazy Purple shows through everywhere, such as under the hood, trunk, doors, etc.  When I removed the R/T badges there was factory paint in the punched holes on the quarter panels; almost if the previous person had gone through the trouble to swap panels, or not?  There is no sign of a overhead console being present; I've seen pictures so I kind of know what to look for.  The rear fiberglass plug holding the factory piece of glass had a very well done molded plastic part covered in a black cloth, I will have to check if this piece is stamped mopar anywhere on it.

If this was one of your projects would you put the R/T and SE badges back, just the SE, or leave both off?  I would hate to deprive the car of a badge it was born with, but I'm not about badges if they are not correct.

Thank you again!
