NOTES: 70 & 71 cars use a telescopic antennae, while 72-74 cars use a 31" fixed mast antennae.

The crossover box on a 3 speaker car is the same as one on a 5 speaker car.  The wiring harness between components is different to accommodate the fader and rear speakers.

Convertibles cannot be equipped with H31, R31, or R32 because there is no package tray to mount them.

A microphone for your 72 or 73 car with cassette player could be ordered over the counter at your local dealership, but could not be ordered to come with the car from the factory.
The factory installed microphone has a straight cord, while the over the counter microphone has a curly cord.

A defogger or rear speaker with fader could have been added to an otherwise unequipped car by the dealership.  These dealership add on kits included an oval bezel and a speaker grill to cover the hole which would need to be cut into the standard non-perforated package tray.

Any of these components should work on any E body with the exception of the 70 Challenger. It has a different dash. Components specific to the 70 challenger are...
1. all three speaker grills on the dash
2. The plastic dash trim around the radio/stereo with or without 8 track notch.
3. "radio trim plate" will have vertical ribs if not equipped with a rallye dash.

EDIT: to add to your post from another one of your posts:  Here's @cataclysm80  comments about speakers:

The magnets in original speakers have weakened with age.  Reconing doesn't do much to fix that.

It's nice to have speakers that work, but if you really plan to listen to them, then you want them to work Well.  Most aftermarket speakers use a larger ceramic magnet.  Turnswitch.com makes speakers with super magnets like you find inside computers.  They have 4 times the field strength of original speakers, and twice the field strength of typical aftermarket ceramic magnets, all while being small enough to look like the original speakers and fit without having to perform dash surgery.  Greg Ward has highly recommended them on numerous occasions.

http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm

Make sure you're running 8 ohm speakers with vintage radios & 4 ohm with newer radios (including conversion radios).

My original comments:  Oh MY GOSH!!!!!   :takealook:  That's the best Radio Code decoded / option list I've EVER seen!!!!!!  It's things like this that get me so excited I'll hardly sleep tonight.   :veryexcited:      :veryexcited:    :veryexcited:    :veryexcited:    :veryexcited:    :veryexcited:

I don't see it at the moment, but somewhere around here I have a note about the microphone cord for the cassette player being curly or not curly.  I think it has something to do with whether or not it's a factory installed microphone or an over the counter microphone.

(UPDATE: Found my note: The factory installed microphone has a straight cord, while the over the counter microphone has a curly cord.)

Wow...That is some serious information  :veryexcited: We should pair that with the identifying photos on Greg Wards radio site :alan2cents:   http://www.wardsclassiccarradiorepair.com/id15.html

@cataclysm80 that is the most thorough E-body radio encyclopedia I have ever read!  We really need a "mind blown" emoticon because that kind of info really flips my lid! :clapping:  Thank you for sharing

Incredible information ! Thanks for taking the time to do that and post it.

I have a question!!

Would all the codes appear on the fender tag?

Burdar

QuoteWould all the codes appear on the fender tag?

Each different stage of production had a way of tracking what options each car was supposed to receive.  That's why you can sometimes find multiple build sheets in the same car.  The people putting the dash together had a build sheet to go off of.  People on the main assembly line had a separate build sheet they looked at.  The fender tag was the body shop's way of determining what options the car was going to receive.  If the body needed a special part in order to install a component down the line, they needed to know about it.  Those are the options that were put on the fender tag.  If an option didn't require the body shop to install a special part, then they didn't need to know about it and it wasn't put on the tag.

If the car was going to receive a radio, the body shop needed to know so they could install a fender with an antenna hole in it.  The radio code will be on the fender tag.  My car has the R11 radio WITH a single rear speaker.  R11 is the ONLY code on the fender tag in regards to a radio.  The rear speaker option isn't on it.

cataclysm80

 :iagree:  Yep, that is correct.

so they could install a fender with an antenna hole in it.

Except I think the assembly line didn't have fenders with antenna holes and fenders without antenna holes, they just had fenders (without antenna hole).
If the car needed an antenna, they made the hole in the fender for it.

Great info! My car which I believe is all original has the R31 rear speaker and fader switch yet the fender tag only shows R11. Were these radio codes always on the data tag?
