If you're serious about using nutserts/rivnuts in sheet metal, -go and buy- the right sized annular cutters. I use Hougen Rotacuts with the pointed center. They make perfect circles in the sheet metal without any distortion. I have many, many of those installed throughout my car. It is much nicer to not need a nut and washer on everything, or require access to the backside.

I was in the aerospace industry for 18 years. Machinist, tool maker. We used those shell cutters alot on sheet metal. Nice clean accurate holes.
