Hi, interesting 1970 A66 Challenger on Facebook. July 1970 SPD and has code J46 (Locking gas cap) listed on the tag. I have never seen that code listed on a tag before. have you? Thanks

"J46" did show up late-'70 & early-'71 model year

Wife's 1971 Challenger R/T has J46 on the fender tag.

I have a couple caps, one original to her car and one NOS.

Thanks, I know they have done changes during the year and wasn't sure if this was one of them.

This A66 also has V6X longitudinal stripe code which is also pretty rare. Non-R/T version.

V6X was just discussed in the A66 registry thread

As of now, there are two A66 Challengers in the Registry and documented with the V6X longitudinal stripe!

Just a logical thought regarding coding of the gas cap on the fender tag.
6bbl, is correct that the J46 coding seems to have started late in the 70 model year and continued into 1971.

Specific to A66 cars in the Registry; there are two fender tags with the J46 code, one with a SPD of July 6th and the other on July 8th, both late builds for 1970.

Emissions regulations were getting stricter for the 1971 model year and the requirement for less gas vapors entering the air might have resulted in starting of the coding on the tag for locking gas caps.

I kind of equate this with something similar; when they started coding for the sport hood on A66 Challengers on or about January, 1970, about the same time the new crumple zones started to appear on Challenger hoods.
Just postulation of course! but sounds logical!
