Is this transmission worth anything or scrap it? My son had it in his 71 Challenger for a couple of years and liked the highway gear but not first gear and we changed it out around 2006. I forgot I still had it. It has the 5.1" front bearing house. There was also a flywheel with an 11 inch clutch disc in the box. I don't know what these originally came from. Any value?

good resale value, don't scrap it. good for mid range power vehicles, don't think they are good for 400+hp though if I remember correctly

I would think there are lots of B and E bodies out there that would work well with that trans. Not everybody has 400+ hp under the hood.  :alan2cents:
If you weren't five states and one country away from me, I'd buy it off you.

Worth depends on who you sell it to.
This is a 4 speed overdrive transmission that, by its tailhousing, which should be cast iron, came from a truck or, I believe, possibly a van.  It is the same tailshaft for an E or B body, so it will fit with the right bellhousing opening.
I have several.  You used to be able to pick them up for $25.
You will hear that they can't take horsepower.  That is because of the floating countershaft.  The countershaft has a loose fit in the case of 0.005" to 0.0065" when new.  With too much torque and aggressive clutch application, the shaft will pound back and forth in this clearance gap and eventually make the hole oblong.

However, if you have a bushing pressed into the front countershaft bore in the case, and used the countershaft from a non-floating case (which should be any older non-OD4 trans) it will hold up to lots of power.
The non-OD4 countershaft is a press fit into the rear aluminum bore and eliminates the pounding out problem.  Same with the shaft into the front bushing.

Jamie Passon does this press in bushing conversion.  He also sells aluminum tail housings.

I have one done by him.  I have a Hemi 4 speed that I have transferred the guts to this case, added and Al tail and side cover, and don't expect any problems behind a 440.  Talk to Jamie.

This could be a selling point in selling the trans you have if you can find someone interested in making a light performance trans.

 :iagree: no VIN & 11" clutch = mid-'70s to '80s pick-up or van

Thanks. If no one local wants these, I'll drain the oil and take it to the local transfer station where they have recycling bins for metal. Not worth it to me to mess with it.

Sounds like if we have a member close by to Terry...they might wanna stop by and help him out of this burden and walk away with a free gear box ! :drinkingbud:

I bought one from the local pick an pull for $200. That included the shifter, linkage and torque shaft. I pulled it from an 85 truck. I wouldn't toss it. The tail shaft housing is worth keeping because of the b/e shifter mounting. I have a 69 b body 4 speed I would have used it for if you were closer. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'd drive down and pick it up but I can't crss the border right now. I have one now but it's cast iron.

A local club member may take it so that saves me a trip and the problem with the lubricant disposal.

If the boarder was open I would be interested  ::) someone will want it. Don't scrap it

I see them for sale at $400-$500 usually. I have one sitting in my garage. If anyone in Massachusetts needs one let me know.

71vert340, if your local guys flakes out on you or you get tired of waiting on them, let me know. I'm interested in all your parts and have family in the area that can pick it up from you.

No way would I be scrapping that , I did about 20 conversions to this trans over the years , only one person had me remove it . I had the A body version in my duster for 9 seasons drag racing it with slicks running mid 11s & street driving it , never hurt the trans but disintegrated 4 8 3/4 diffs

Were you running them stock or bushing the front of the countershaft to be a tight fit?
