I have a 383 engine with a 727 trans that came with the 70 Challenger convertible I bought. The convertible was a 318 car and the engine is long gone, previous owner bought the 383 to put in it so it came as part of my purchase. The 383 is a 1969 block.

I'm going with a 392 engine so I'd like to get something out of the 383 if I can. I started by using a scope I have and pulled the spark plugs to look inside the cylinders. Cylinders 2-4-6-8 looked fine. On the other side, #1 had what appeared to be rust along one side the cylinder wall, and #3 had a thin line of rust that I was afraid might be a cracked block (thankfully it's not).

I pulled the head, and #3 cylinder issue was just a line of surface rust that cleaned off. However, #1 cylinder has rust that feels more significant than honing would remedy - so the block would need to be bored.

Is this 383 worth anything?

Is it a 1969 casting?  Most 69 casting went in to 1970 model year cars.  If you can find the VIN on the pad above the oil pan you might be able to see if you can find the original car it came out of.  Then you will most likely get top dollar for it.

If you have the time, ambition, interest, Cody's suggestion would be worth looking into, but it's more than likely that your 383 was pulled from a car that went to the crusher.  Is it an HP block?  If not, I'd guess that you might be able to get a few hundred bucks for it.  If it is an HP, you might get a few hundred more than that. :alan2cents:

Post up the VIN sequence on the oil pan rail and the numbers/letters from the ID pad near the distributor hole.  We all love a good mystery.

It is not an HP block, I was able to check that.

I agree - was thinking maybe a couple hundred for the engine and I guess I will sell the 727 trans with it since they are bolted together right now.
