1971 Shaker 340 Tor-red 4 spd Cuda
« on: March 18, 2017, 01:47:37 PM »
Welcome to my Restoration thread, I recently re-purchased a legit 1971 340 ‘Cuda with a 4 speed transmission with Center console, some of the other options include a Shaker hood, Road Lamps, 450 Steel wheels, 3.23 sure grip, Vinyl top  and EV2 Tor red Hi-Impact paint. I first bought the car in 1990 after getting out of the Air Force, It was recently repainted and was wearing 1970 fenders, it also had a hopped up 383 and a 4.56 gear out back, I tracked down a set of 1971 fenders and had my buddy paint them but they didn’t match the rest of the car so he suggested I have Maaco paint the entire car…so less than $400 later it all matched and is still wearing that same paint job. I sold the 383 and 4.56 gear and built a 1970 340 and installed a 3.55 center section out of a AAR ‘Cuda I purchased out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL about 8 months before getting out of the service. I also relieved the AAR of its 15”x7”Rallye Wheels, Exhaust manifolds, LD 340 intake (Six BBL was missing) and the rear panel trim before parting it out and selling what was rest. Looking back now that was a bad decision but hey, I was 22 years old and didn’t know better, I sold the Cuda about a year later and in 1998 tracked down the owner (since he moved) and I remained in contact with him ever since stopping by to see the Cuda every 5 years or so and reminding him I f he ever wanted to sell it to give me a call. Right after this year’s Mopar Nationals he called and I couldn’t get there fast enough, I know he didn’t drive it much and when I compared the odometer to  the title when he bought it off me in 1990 it only had 457 more miles put on.
I have fixed a few problems over the winter like wiring and the transmission, it now has a date correct 1971 833 transmission built by Passon performance. I’ve tried to refinish or replace several components making it presentable to drive around this summer before tearing it apart for a full rotisserie restoration. I also have tracked down several date correct parts and am storing them away for the restoration like the 3418621 & 3418623 Exhaust manifolds, 4972S Carb and DR1114429 solenoid (restored by Scott@ Harms), 3512100 Intake manifold, 3488177 Clutch petal safety switch and 2944450 wheels and Standard gauge cluster.
Although the car looks presentable there are some issues that will need attention like the frame rails 3 out of the 4 have rust damage and will need repaired or replaced. It has the wrong leaf springs (they belong to a B body), I also discovered that the K frame is earlier B body also.
Here are some pictures starting back in 1990 when I first bought it home to present.

The Bad !!!!!
This crappy frame work was all done prior to me purchasing the car back in 1990, remarkably the floor pan and trunk pan look great ...must be due to factory undercoating.

So the tag you showed in the other thread was a reproduction supplied by Dave ? Well that makes sense...I didn't realize that looking at the picture. sorry.

The three 1970 Cuda examples I have restored have only N96 and they are 430, A11, B05

The three 71's with N96 only were 909,925,324

Yes, That was brought to my attention by Dave Wise also, he feels through his research that it should have an Export tag because of the I code on the broadcast sheet.

Yes, unfortunately the original was not with the car when I first bought it back in 1990. The guy I bought it from back then said he removed it when he painted it and said he thought he had it in a tool box but couldn't find it... I went back 3 times to see if he found it but he never came up with it. 26 years later this was my only alternative, I went to Dave Wise because he wont just make you a tag without documented proof, I had to send him pics of the Broadcast sheet and the body VIN numbers.
