This has probably been discussed in the past but when I searched I couldn't find it. Can the potmetal bezels be rechromed? Has anyone had this done. I'm looking at buying new ones which aren't cheap but I'm sure rechroming won't be either. I just wondered which is best. Also if anyone has rechromed theirs did you have any problems repainting the black back on? Just trying to figure which way to go.

They can be rechromed but with "white" metal it will be very expensive as every pit marks has to be drilled out and filled. You will also likely lose all your sharp edges.

Yes: I expect rechroming originals would cost more than buying new ones.

I've been wanting to try out a product called Muggy Weld. Supposedly, it has the perfect melting point for pot metal repairs so you could drill and sand the pits yourself followed by filling them in with the solder type of product. A final smoothing and then the only major expense is the chroming process itself but it would probably be more affordable if you sent them good pieces to work with.

Not sure the best way to paint the black on so it looks good and holds up.

Thanks for the replies. You guys have me leaning to just buying new ones.

I've talked to rechromers and they melt solder into holes and then surface them. It's a real time consuming job and pretty hard to keep sharp detail in intricate pieces.

I had my original bezels plated and they actually came out pretty nice, no issues. The really good thing about it was the plater is a friend of mine. He plated a lot of things for me for free. He's since gone out of business and moved to another city.   Thanks,   Al

I bought new ones for mine and they were real nice. I didn't care for the studs that came with them. I had to by a bottom tap to get the studs in all the was. Probably typical with any chrome process.
