I have been looking around trying to find the larger of the two Acorn nuts used on the 70 and 71 Cuda side marker lights, and no one seems to have them available or even list part numbers for them anymore. It looks like the only reproduction source stopped making them years ago. What do people use to secure the backing plate to the housing, just a standard PAL style nut? Does anyone happen to know of somewhere that has these still available? It doesn't have to be a perfect match for my car, but I would like it to look right if possible.

The picture (borrowed from eBay) shows the ones I am talking about.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what size they are and my loose ones are rather put away, but AMK Products has two sizes in their catalog, part numbers b-12954 and B-12967.

I pulled one of the originals off my '70 cuda, and based on the measurements, I think @rjhjr has a winner with the measurements of the AMK b-12967.

The B-12967 is tagged at .8" OAH, and listed as Chrysler.

Here's my 51 year old acorn nut pictured (the lower scale is decimal inches).

As a side note, Roseville can order these for you, if you are below AMK's minimum order.

The ones from AMK are the more common ones for machine threads on Challenger marker lights ...You need the self cutting ones for Cuda marker lights :alan2cents:

@anlauto What would you think of running a die on the housing to thread the AMK onto the Barracuda piece?  (trying to use some agile thinking)

rjhjr

Awesome depth of knowledge!
After a pause I remembered sorting some old stuff.
Found three 'self cutters'.
Probably off my 71 340 billboard hemi orange car, rip 1978.

Could work, but the solid studs are a lot thicker then the threaded ones...might take some cutting  :dunno:

Thank you guys for the good info so far.  I think AMK did used to make this nut, but stopped several years ago.  I wonder if they could make a run of them again of we had enough interest?

I would be afraid that a normal thread cutting die would break that pot metal stud.  If you had a thread rolling tool or a way to cut it like is done on a lathe where you can cut a little over multiple passes, that might work.

Alternative would be seeing who might have some in their hardware stash here, or in the past I would have followed up with one of the Mopar bone-yards, although fewer are left now.  Ted Stephens down in Alabama might have some.  I think Mopar City in Oregon IL is just about closed out.

I had a whole bin of them at a swap meet a few years ago selling them at $0.25 each...That Sylvain Goucher from Quebec bought the whole bin for $50.00...That was over five years ago I bet, and I've only been able to collect a few since, but I use them up pretty quick...

This was from about 30 years of collecting, they're all gone now, and YES I do regret selling them now...

Thank you all.  I will keep looking to see if I can find a few more originals out there to round out the needed set.

If any one has some, please shoot me a PM.  I am certainly interested, and thanks to rjhjr for helping out with some.
