Checking if there is a popular way to repair broken studs on my shaker trim ring?

I snagged pictures that @76orangewagon posted in his now gone thread of how he repaired his broken studs.  I edited the one photo with details of what he did.  Others have done the same repair method of drilling out, tapping, thread insert, and putty repair.

Is the trim ring too thin to spot weld those studs instead of JB weld. 

That @76orangewagon  thread was awesome.  Unfortunate that it is gone.
