groove between gutter and roof structure

Does anyone know if this groove between the gutter and the roof support has any purpose aside from making it harder for me to reproduce a section of the gutter?

looks like one of the holes for the weather strip track to fasten up underneath. They make it a groove instead of a hole so you can line things up easier and faster.
