I went to Wally world and both a plastic table leg cap.  Cut about an inch off of it with a razor blade and screwed it down over the spring.  Works great however, because it's so thick on the end you really have to push the hood down to get it to latch.  I like the 35 MM film canister top idea.  I think I've still got one hanging around.
