Is this factory seam sealer?

'72 Challenger. The car was repainted many years ago so I suspect this "interior undercoating" job was done then. Unless I'm mistaken, this "sealer" or whatever it is does not look like the factory stuff, appears to be rubberized undercoating. I'm not sure why this was done though, the floors look to be in pretty decent shape.

It comes off pretty easy in big chunks.

It's in the trunk as well. It was obviously painted over but I'm not sure whether it was during the repaint or otherwise.

The car has some rust issues under the deck filler. If/when the trunk panel gets replaced this will al be gone but I'm not sure what to do with the passenger compartment. I'm inclined to leave it but the problem is it comes off really easily and it's not necessary.

Mostly I'm juat trying to confirm what this stuff is. I don't think it's a dealer add-on thing because I can't see a prep dept. taking out the entire inside of a brand-new car to do this.

Thanks for any input.

This is on the inside of the car, right?

I would say no...unless someone heated it (torch, or heat gun).
It looks kinda correct, but not the surface.

As best I can remember it looks like the stuff that was on the inside of my '73.

Interesting.

Both of my cars were built at Hamtramck. My late-production (6/23/71) Duster does not have the same type of treatment.

The Challenger is the "newest" Mopar I've owned (4/10/72) so perhaps this was a new methodology for 1972 cars.

Almost seems more like sound deadener than anything.

I kind of think it is factory. Some of my cars have had a mess like that sprayed on them at the factory, extremely sloppy. They definetly weren't building show cars.

I get that they tended to be somewhat sloppy with this kind of thing but when I think of 'normal seam sealer,' it's usually brushed on or maybe applied with a caulking gun, not sprayed. This car does have the normal sealer between the firewall and floor pan seams. This black stuff appears to be rubberized undercoating which I've never really seen applied so liberally inside the car.

Again, if it is a factory-applied treatment, my guess is that it was done to address NVH concerns. As far as I can tell there's no regular sealer under it either so they used it as a singular solution.
