Which way to install filler tube grommet?

Replacing my gas tank as part of an EFI upgrade.
Does the rounded side of the grommet go in tank or face outside?
Any tips to make the whole tank install easier?

There aren't any short cuts I know of but you could put the grommet on beforehand.

I believe it goes in as pictured but it's been awhile. As well you have another rectangle piece that goes over that.

Thx for the replies, my plan is to:

- install grommet in tank, round lip out (no RTV or sealer needed?)
- install the rubber floor pan gasket on filler tube (Challenger)
- partially install tank with straps, let it hang down
- slide tube down through floor pan into tank, lubed grommet with silicon beforehand
- tighten up straps holding tank
- pull tube back up to mount to qtr panel

Sound right?

Same here...a good lube that does not affect rubber also

I just hit it with WD40..

I can't visualize how I can do it that way by myself?
With tube mounted to qtr, doesn't tank have to slide up and over from bottom?
So straps would be in the way?
Once tank is on tube, hard tight compression fit, I'd need to hold tank up somehow while at same time reinstalling the straps that have to be rotated 90 degrees sideways to get seated.
Continue holding tank up while bolting strap down.

Believe me, I'd like the easiest way possible.

With the tube mounted completely in place, the floor grommet as well....
Hook the straps in place and allow to hang
Hook the J bolts in place and allow to hang
Install the tank on the tube, by pushing up and over
grab a strap and hook it up to the J bolt and start a nut - repeat
make sure everything is centered up and tighten.

The round part of the grommet to the outside. I use a silicone lube on the pipe and grommet. I slide the tube into the tank, maybe 1 inch too far, with the tube to floor seal on the seal as you said. When the tank is in place and the j-bolts tightened then I pull the tube into the quarter and secure it with the screws. It works for me, I think there is less chance of tearing the tank to grommet seal this way but they are pretty hardy.

DMT (manufacturer of the seal) responded to my question:

"The rounded side goes into the tank"

Now I'm confused, what's right?

This might actually makes sense, extra seal area inside tank?
